Shields on GT-racing cars

    After all I decided to start another thread talking about shields on F-Cars.

    I don't like shields on road cars but that's just my opinion.

    What really bothers me are SF-shields on private entered racing cars. This seems to be a common practice since many years.
    Photo shows AF-Corse 458 Italia at Le Mans 2011, but many prodrive 550s did have shields too.

    Is there a rule wich team uses shields?
    I think this is very confusing because many of these cars were built an entered without any support of the factory.

    What are your opinions?

    Well, Ferrari sells challenge cars (built and sold specifically for the track and not campaigned by Ferrari S.p.A.) with shields from the factory. If Ferrari is fine with it, I'm fine with it.

    I don't see any problem with it. You're still representing the brand, even if they don't support your team.

    With all the miscelaneous advertizing on the car, one can hardly see shields.

    So you're okay with it?

    But what about the historians in 30+ years?
    They will be totally confused!

    Historians will know that Ferrari has not gone road racing in spors cars as a factory effort since???

    here we go again................................shields or no shields!

    besides that, over the years I have noticed that on many of the race cars the shields are decals not metal shields. maybe to save on weight?

    It used to mean something, not so much anymore. The Ferrari challenge cars were supported by the factory, so that made sense, but since the factory puts the shields on road cars now I don't think there's much argument to be made over appropriateness. All it means now is that you have a Ferrari and you want to make sure everyone knows it.

    Ditto. Now that the Factory no longer races Sports Cars it means very little. The idea that future Historians of Ferrari Factory racing efforts will be confused by this as they know the Factory hasn't raced sprots cars for many years is silly.

    On another shield related note:
    I know that originally, the shields were painted on the race cars. Then it became some sort of transfer. If someone did want to restore a shield that was orginially a transfer today, is there a way to put the transfer on the car and have it be durable enough to survive things like washing, waxing, etc.?

    I figure it can be clearcoated but really, is it possible to have a durable transfer applied and, if so, where would you get one?

    Hell, even back in the glory days, private, non-Factory supported sports racers were running around with the SF shields stuck on them, so the Factory-works-cars-only rule has at least a 55+ year history of being broken. It is pretty easy to find period pictures in the late 1950s of the Von Neumann or Parravano or Edgar cars racing w/ the shields - good clients of Ferrari for sure, but not Scuderia Ferrari team cars.

    Here is a 1955 500 Mondial - the shields in that period were water-tranfer decals. I have no idea when they went to adhesive stickers.

    Thank you for jumping in, you made me change my mind.
    Of course I know this / these wonderful cars but I mistook the SF-Shield as a hint for factory support.
    How did the water-tranfer decals endure a 24h-race especially in the rain?

    Napolis: I was speaking with tongue in cheek when I said the historians could be confused. Please excuse me if this was not clear.
