    What do you mean by burst pipe? Did the pipe have a leak or did it disconnect from the cast part?

    The pipe simply comes out. Some have welded them so they don't fail.

    is that a fairly common problem? Does it affect 997s too?

    I was reading on 6speedonline that this is particular to the GT1 engine derivatives - Turbo/GT2/GT3 - particularly the cars that get tracked. It affects 996s and 997s.

    Fairly common problem and I am pretty sure the racers weld the pressed in tube to prevent a repeat, if both parts are aluminum (I think they are). If possible, I'd have welded this one and IMO this is a rare example of poor engineering by Porsche.
