What is the best Carolina town north or south that:

    is pro-business
    High median income demographic
Offers access to mountains/ocean w/in a couple hours
    Historical characteristics
    Vibrant
    Unique in its own way

It's a matter of much debate.

I would not call paint Charlotte or RTP with "Unique in its own way" or "Historical characteristics"

How big of a 'town' are you looking for? An even split between mountains and beach will be tough with the exception of maybe Raleigh/Cary and Charlotte and like Daniel said, with a few exceptions, there isn't much that could be considered 'historical' going on there.

I've lived in Raleigh/Cary, Charleston, and now Charlotte. If I were raising a family, I would pick Raleigh/Cary. If I were young and wanted to have fun (and obviously if you enjoy history), I would pick Charleston. If I had to move to Charlotte to keep my job, then I would move to Charlotte ;)

Both Charleston and Charlotte have pretty large variances in income levels and it shows in some areas, at least compared to the areas north and west of Raleigh which tend to be more affluent. I think Asheville is relatively upscale, but you are solidly in the mountains at that point. From what I've seen, Greenville, SC has really evolved into a nice city, but again much closer to the mountains.

Maybe if you rank your list in terms of what is most important, we could better assist you.

Yes, his criteria was all over the board.

I was mostly thinking the best place to start a business.

Oh, and the Greenville SC area is TERRIBLE, don't even consider moving there.

Nothing but hicks, unemployment, urban blight and bad water.

If you move there your dog will die and your wife will get fat.

Stay away for your own good.

Spread the word to everyone you know.

what kind of business? Durham, on the surface, meets your stated criteria as marc noted. Pound for pound one of the best restaurant towns in the U.S. and that's no baloney.

Charleston.. but it's not a couple of hours to the hills though.

Great restaurants, good entertainment. And they'll bend over backwards to welcome business to the area. Lots of cuties makes the area easy on the eyes.. ;-p

My aunt lives there sir...take back all your mean spirited comments or else!

That said, the Germans love it so the hicks can't be that bad...http://www.bmwusfactory.com/

In all seriousness the revitalized downtown area I visited in late '09 is pretty cool especially Falls Park.

Wilmington is a nice city. It is diverse and has some history. It is quite a distance from the mountains. One can get decent bagels in Wilmington!

ok - I'm going to investigate:

    Charleston
    Lenior
    Wilmington
    Mooresville
    Greenville
    Blowing Rock
    Raleigh/Cary

Thank you for the suggestions - I'm going to travel around the states this summer and zero in.

Hickville in anyway doesn't bother me - after all I'm from Kentucky however I can understand no one in NC wanting a KY fan inbound;)
