100 Most Beautiful Cars of All Time
The Cars That Turn Heads, Grab Hearts and Inspire Songs
    By John Pearley Huffman,

Great-looking cars aren't just long and low and wide. They're eye-candy adventures in themselves and they cast shadows that are better-looking than most of the stuff humanity has churned out over the eons. Up close they fascinate in details like door hinges crafted with elegance and fuel caps that would look at home on ocean liners. From afar they inspire memories of legendary races, glorious moments in the past, great crimes and the pinnacles of human achievement. They are machines that promise freedom, glory, speed and sexual conquest. They are why cars are art, even if the art world is too self-referential to know it.

Here are the 100 cars that, no matter how old or new they are, still manage to take our collective breath away and beat up our car-loving souls. They're not necessarily great cars, but they all manage to attract attention, even when they're parked in a barn for a few decades.

    1. 1974 Lamborghini Countach LP400: Marcello Gandini's masterpiece. Successor to the Miura. Outrageous in every way. The most visually provocative car of all time. The first bedroom wall poster car ever, it has defined automotive lust for three generations.

    5. 1971 Lamborghini Miura SV: The first midengine supercar. Gave Enzo Ferrari the vapors. Details like lay-flat headlights, intake strakes built into the doors and a roof that finishes in black slats instead of a window are still extreme.

    84. 2003 Lamborghini Gallardo: The Gallardo made Lamborghini cool again. It perfectly mixes the brand's traditional sledgehammer visual impact with modern minimalist sensibilities. Will look good for decades.

The original Countach was always the best looking Countach. One even I'd like to own, and I'm no Lamborghini fan.

I know any survey like this is subjective, but seriously... a Fisker Karma at 37?!?!

Wonder what they think of the Maserati Quattroporte that won so many awards back in 2003, 04, 05, 06, etc.. as the "the most beautiful car ever built" by Architectural Digest, Automobile, GQ and numerous other publications? And that didn't even make their list?

    I must agree with #1 though :)

Although the Countach is my favorite, I'm not sure if its the most "beautiful" ...but the Miura would be #1 on my list for that. Of coarse, all these kinds of lists are just somebody's opinion...

I'm very fortunate, I see both of these masterpieces in my garage every day. And even though I am a designer by profession, it is of course only my biased opinion that the Countach is truly the most outrageous design ever put on four wheels, but not the most beautiful car of all time. The Miura IS the most beautiful car, ever.

And what about the Lamborghini Diablo?

Where does it stand in this ranking?

In my book the Diablo is nicer than the Countach.

Yes, but (and no disrespect intended to your car collection) you don't own the original Countach. You have one where they have ruined the looks with wheel arch extensions that simply don't work with the shape.

Of course every one will have their opinion on that, and that could easily start another thread by itself, lol, but Gandini himself preferred the aggression of the wheel arches, as do many of us. But my point is that any of the Miuras are more beautiful than any Countach.

where can we see the entire list?

top three for me would be the alfa tipo 33 stradale, followed by the miura and series 1 e-type.

    fair enough...i agree with you.

oh i see...the alfa tipo 33 stradale runs close behind the venerable nissan 300zx twin turbo.

no talbot lago...this list is seriously lightweight.

    The Miura's are all beautiful.

The Countach does nothing for me. I'm shocked the two aren't swapped.

With so many cars in this world it would be impossible to chose #1 for me. Miura wouldn't be it but it's very very nice looking.

The author has some odd tastes honestly. I wouldn't have 50 of them on my list.

    Inspire to sing songs?

The best car line of all time:

"My Maserati does 185. I lost my license --- now I don't drive." I don't remember any Lamboghini songs nearly as popular or memorable.

But, the LP 400 is one car I would love to own, even with it's flaws.

    HOWEVER:

    Someone sure loves Porsches though. A '73 911 RS better looking than a Daytona, a Dino, a 250 Lusso, a 250 California, a 288 GTO, a Lancia Stratos, an F40, an Alfa type 33 Stadale and a Cord 810?

    No freakin' way.

Congrats to the Countach though. It's a one of a kind not for just it's looks but for the shock it gave the Auto industry. Without it, there would be far fewer super cars today.

You failed to recognize that #64 was a Nissan 300z. ;)
Possibly not prettier than the Stradale at 65

I do believe the 73 911 is one of the top 10 cars of all time. 250 Lusso also top 10. I couldn't choose between them myself and pricing is now close to equal with 73's tripling in value over the last 3 years.

Never thought of the countach as "beautiful" really. Many other things (all good) but more radical/exotic and aggressive over pretty or beautiful... The Alfas, Masers and classic Ferraris along with many Jag models get the "Pretty" awards. Exception for Lambos of course is the Miura which always ranks high with a perfect blend of beauty and aggression.
