More Old Photos

Well Ferrari didn't design his own cars either, yet they are called Ferrari's. That Ferrari had his hand in the construction is all that I meant, via his Scuderia Ferrari shop in Modena.

His car are called Ferraris because he commissioned and paid for them. Alfa Romeo commissioned and paid for the Alfetta.

And yes he might have had a lot of involvement:

On 16 October 1956 was held in Portugal the Estoril elegance contest, organized by the ACP. Among several participants, was the # 250MM 0332MM from Leonel Castelo Branco, who won the cup "The best car modifying in Portugal." The transformation of the 250MM was executed in the workshops of Electro-Bombarda, and as shown by the picture, passed by the placement of various chrome and a hood .... Needless to say, the sponsor of the Cup was .. . "Electro-Bombarda"

While organizing storage boxes last weekend, I discovered several slides of the first Ferrari I experienced in person as a twelve year old kid. I had the slides scanned into the JPEG format today so I could add them to my other pictures. The pictures were taken in front of the Grand Casino in Monte Carlo during August of 1966, while on vacation with my parents. Still remember very vividly the visual experience of the design and the flow of the body curves of that magnificent car. I was instantly addicted to Ferraris at that moment. As you can see most of the cars at that time were designed of a “boxy” nature as evident by the new Chevy parked next to the Ferrari. I will post more of several other cars that I photographed that day if I come across other slides. Hopefully, Marcel will be able to provide some history of the car and possibly the current owner is a member here.

This 275GTB "08539" was delivered late May 1966 to its first owner, Girolamo Fani-Ciotti, in Roma, so your photos show the car when it was only months old. It had come to the USA by the 1970's.

I recorded a number of additional details when I saw paperwork that accompanied the car last year or the year before.

The car is currently a lovely blue in color and was sold twice in the last two years by Fantasy Junction in Emeryville, CA. Last I knew (as of late last August) a sale was pending to a new owner in Switzerland.

Thanks for the information John. Interesting history. I remember speaking at length to the man you see in the middle picture and assumed he was the owner. Another interesting point I learned from the link you attached is that John Kelly owned the car for awhile and I believe Tim Stanford serviced the car. I will give Tim a call tomorrow since he also services my car. Thanks again.

 

I had put together the documentation for the owner of 08539 who then consigned it to Fantasy Junction. 08539 lives near Berne, Switzerland, since November 2011.

In Monaco August 1966 the car had already some damage on the right door.
08539 was serviced twice at the Factory Assistenza Clienti at Viale Trento Trieste in Modena, on the 25th May 1966 (odometer showing 14'500 kms) and again on the 20th October 1966 (now with 17'559 kms). By 1973 it was in Laguna Beach/CA.

Here's a photo of the then yellow 08539 on the 20th January 2005 (during the Cavallino weekend in Palm Beach/FL), when owned by fchatter John F. Kelly.

Yes, the owner is very lucky to add these to his documentation. I would kill for some slides of my GTC when it was in Switzerland for the first years of its life.

I BOUGHT 08539 IN 1977 FROM SID SIMPSON IN HOUSTON. THE CAR WAS TITLED TO AN ARIZONA ATTORNEY BUT I RECALL BEING TOLD THAT THE OWNER WAS A MEXICAN NATIONAL. SHE WAS CORVETTE BLUE AT THAT TIME AND I HAD HER PAINTED BLACK IN 1978. THE PAINTER SAID THAT THE ORIGINAL COLOR WAS SILVER WHICH AGREES WITH THE ABOVE PICTURES. I HAD THE CAR PAINTED FLY YELLOW IN THE EARLY 2000S. THE INTERIOR WAS LEFT ORIGINAL , INCLUDING THE ORIGINAL CIGARETTE BURN IN A DOOR PANEL,EXCEPT FOR THE THE SEATS AND CARPETS

DURING DISASSEMBLY FOR PAINTING WE FOUND A RECEIPT FOR TUNEUP PARTS FROM A CALIFORNIA STORE, WHICH WOULD SUBSTANTIATE MARCEL'S INFO.

A SUBSEQUENT OWNER HAD THE CAR STRIPPED AND PAINTED BLUE, ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT WAS THE ORIGINAL COLOR, BUT THAT WAS PROBABLY BASED ON FINDING A TRACE OF THE OLD CORVETTE BLUE PAINT

I apologize, in that I think I knew the answer before asking it. I sincerely do think that they could sell quite a few more at that price. Not, though, at 750 Sterling. I guess I'll just have to continue to peruse the copy at the National Automotive History Collection, like I've been for the last couple months. Fascinating place and I'd be glad to introduce anyone to it, if they're in Detroit.

Yes, and it is now fresh from 10 year restoration and can be seen soon at a major event in Europe.

Which engine and with how many valves? Was this the one in the US in the early 1970s?

I am sure you know the story but I quote it for others. I got it from Leonardo Fioraventi the then Pinifarina designer who designed the Daytona when I had diner next to him during the Ferrari Daytona Tour to celebrate the anniversary of the car.

First of all Lenoardo made it very clear that the " real car" was the one with the plexiglas front. This is how he designed it in few weeks , may be days,, and he did not like the front with the lights cover.

When asked about the history of the prototype, that some described as an " interim " model, he told me the real design was already done when they approached Ferrari. But to test the car as this was a PF initiative, and not initially at the request of Ferrari, and this was relatively close to the release of the 275GTB/4 , in order not to create an event that would negatively impact the sales, they designed this prototype which when seen fast from front and somehow from back could look like a flattened 275GTB. So they used it as a muleto, but it was not an interim design, the final design was already done when they built this car.

 

Both prototypes #10287 and #11001 were in the US in the early 1970s.
The chassis of 10287 is stamped 365 GTB. The chassis of 11001 is stamped 275 GTB4.
