A whole new 'who will crash out' thread could be made. In the mid pack it's impossible predict because you never know which rookie noob/idiot is going to do something stupid causing a massive wreck. Sergio Perez in Singapore last year is the best example of a complete rookie idiot ruining someone else's race by completely mucking up a braking zone. Tons of other examples at the start of races too. Well, mainly at the starts of races is where things get very messy

I don't think it is that simple. I could ask what ever happened to Alonso's ability to develop a car? Isn't that part of the reason he is paid the big bucks? There was all this talk about how he was essential in taking Renault to the top because he gave such good feedback to the engineers, influenced the design, etc. Now what? He's forgotten how to do all that? Maybe he never did that at Renault in the first place and he is overrated in that department. He's had 3 years to help the engineers make the car go fast, and nothing. In fact the opposite. They may well be getting slower every year under his input.

Maybe without testing it becomes a moot point?

I agree with the last two post and as long as a Ferrari wins or gets a podium I'll be satisfied and its going to be a long season.

No idea of anything factual yet, but my guess would be the vem
venting will be moved to the rear crash structure area and the exhaust will blow the beam wing. This all would be very difficult to do but nothing is impossible if the fabbed new sidepods and crash tested them this quickly

For sure I think the testing ban is a handicap, but there are thousands of miles covered over race weekends throughout the season. If Alonso was really that strong in developing a car, it should have shown by now, IMO.

True but perhaps Alonso is detrimental in ways that are not immediately apparent. Definitely he is quick (although not the quickest over one lap) and is able to run fast laps over a whole race distance. But his style is aggressive and harder on tires than some. The Renault days were a different era in terms of tire wear and electronic aids. Designing a car to suit Alonso's style may not be the ideal route in this environment. I'm just saying there are intangibles that may factor.

The rookie idiot in that case was Schumacher driving straight into Perez.

In racing the car behind has to avoid running in the car ahead.

In Korea Petrov was the rookie idiot driving straight into an innocent Schumacher.

Sorry friend, but I'm really getting tired of this "#2 driver motivation issue" excuse for Massa:

People bring up the German GP time and again and the only reason Massa was ahead of Alonso was because Alonso was duking it out with Vettel at the start and Massa got by. The normal hacking order of speed was clearly Vettel-Alonso-Massa. Back in those days you couldn't pass because of the "dirty" air and the lack of DRS.

In today's F1 this simply wouldn't happen again. DRS allows the faster driver to get by. So I don't believe for one second that Massa is told to stay behind Alonso. I could imagine such a scenario if Massa were actually breathing down Alonso's neck, but he isn't. And if that would happen regularly I'm sure LdM would have a few strong words with Alonso and ultimately make him Massa's (rhimes with witch).

There is nothing holding Massa back. I'm sure he is allowed to race as fast as he can and what we see (ending up 30 seconds behind Alonso) is all he can do.

I'm not arguing that Phil is in Alonso's league just that his motivation has been compromised by the public humiliation ("Alonso's faster") that the team has visited on him.
In any case I don't see why he's still on board.

    I'm sure you did.

Everyone is different and I cannot speak personally for Massa but for myself the "public humiliation ("Alonso's faster") that the team has visited on him would light another fire under my arse, there must be more too the story than just motivation?

    We all react differently.

Of course there's more. But that may well be a factor.
    All I'm saying.

I understand. My personality is that speculation is unsafe territory and the lack of keeps what sanity I have left intact.
