I've been on a quest for an original (preferably NOS) Carello red stoplight for my Euro M-Series Dino 246GT after having a deduction made by a concours judge for a small crack, which I didn't know about, in the lens. Easy right? Wrong!

My stop light lens has the number 12.314.718 along the outer edge of the lens and 34.538.718 along the outer edge of the center reflector (see pic of my lens). Having this info should allow me to quickly find a correct replacement (why buy 2 when only 1 needs replacement).

TRutlands had a 12.314.718, so I got excited...until I discovered that their did not have the center reflector at all (see other picture).

DinoParts claims to have original Carello 12.314.718, so to be sure I sent emails asking them to confirm that what they had was a match with the picture I sent them and also pointing out the 2 separate numbers on the correct lens. After several attempts, they finally sent me close-up pictures of what their 12.314.718 looked like. Sigh! Their 12.314.718 is not the same as my 12.314.718 (see last picture).

And yes, I've sent requests to Superformance, but haven't received any response yet. Now I'm particularly skeptical that I will be able to find the `correct' Carello 12.314.718 for my Dino since there seems to be variations out there.

Matthias, is the Dinoparts "original Carello 12.314.718" correct for my 71 Dino (i.e., interchangeable, both correct in which case I may just have to buy 2 to have matching lenses) or does my search need to continue?

If the center reflector is actually a separate part, then how are they assembled and how would you replace the incorrect one with the one that matches what I have...without destroying the lens in the process?

The center reflector is a seperate part that can be transfered to your new outer lens. I have found that heating the parts with a heat gun (being careful not to get them too hot) and prying with a soft plastic tool will get them apart.

Seeing as one of your lenses is cracked you should have nothing to loose here.

To re-assemble go to a hobby store and buy modelers glue for plastic models. That will do the trick.

Would it be wrong of me to suggest that these concours judges are just encouraging owners to eliminate all trace of a past life led by these wonderful cars?

    Yep. :D

I have to be honest with you, when I was judging Dinos at a regional FCA event, the only time anything like a tiny crack in a tail light lens would have made a difference was if we had two cars vying for gold or silver that otherwise scored identically. Since you can only have one gold and one silver car, that might serve as a tie breaker.

Although, as I recall, the score sheet does have a deduction for lights, lenses, etc. I had a judge whack me once because the USA version side markers didn't "Look right" no amount of explaining that they were not designed for the car, merely plucked from the parts bin at Fiat, made any difference.

Oh, and I'd set up a search on ebay. They turn of there every now and then.

    squadranuvolari.com has nothing

Go back to my original post in this thread...the DinoParts one is a mismatch (compare reflector lens portions...totally different).

And I have a Dino 246 eBay search already set up...I have seen no taillights for a 246 in the last 9 months.

Try to be a little more general maybe on ebay? just search for "Carello" lots of guys selling this stuff don't have a clue.

And, is the Daytona lens the same? anyone know?

    Oh, and you're welcome.

I located a source for Carello reflector lenses, pn 34.538.718, to go with the reflector lens-less Carello outer lens 12.314.718 I acquired (see pix in my original post). Well the new 34.538.718, which were quite expensive, are NOT the same as my original 34.538.718 reflectors, despite them having the same part number on the lens. Whereas the original reflector lens drops into the front of the main taillight body (I was able to separate one from my cracked outer lens with heat...first pic), this new reflector lens cannot drop in (larger diameter). The two have totally different profiles (see 2nd pic).

Is it possible that Carello actually had different versions of stop taillight under the same exact part number? This is getting impossible, not to mention expensive, trying to find the correct pieces.
