This is really funny to me.

Certain cultures sure do have different tastes. When I was house shopping it was always evident that someone of Persian or similar descent had lived there as there was gold plating and ornamentation everywhere inside and out. Also lots of columns.

To me it was extremely gaudy and tacky but really...to each their own.

The only time it bothers me is when you go into an area like mine with 50's/60s ranch homes and there, smack dab in the middle, is a two story 'palace' that looks like it was lifted out of the middle east.

Sadly what I described is just down the street from me.

I'm always surprised by the large homes around metro Detroit (Chaldian/Persian) that are large, and right next to the main roads so everybody 'sees' the wealth. More of the traditionalist large homes are set back away from the road, and have hills/trees/gates.

http://tinyurl.com/7dac62x 3 or 4 right in a row... just awkward to me.

I'm not a fan of big columns holding up....not much. The red SLR with gold plating would look good in these driveways.

last weeks episode of "selling LA" a divorced mom tours a few houses in Hollywood, they looked normal from the outside but OMG what was on the inside, columns in every room, gold leaf on all the furniture and moulding. The look on the women's face as she says " I can't really picture myself living here".

I wonder what the builders of these mini palaces ever think about "resale"?

At least they're not doing the life-size statues with painted genitals like the crazy Sheik had in front of his house on Sunset Boulevard back in the 70's.
