Its a funny world where buying an old F1 car doesn't gain membership to a particularly exclusive club
Historic racing is only exclusive in that not many people do it (relative to other sports). The reality is a lot of retired-ish usually small business/self made people with the occasional inherited wealth guy thrown in. You pay for the pleasure by putting up with all the bullish*t. I can only imagine how many pain-in-the-a*se people would front the money for Ferrari's program, then discover that it's much harder than it looks and often uncomfortable and inconvenient. Of course, you get lots of photos of yourself wearing red pyjamas, which will impress your dinner party guests.
That probably sums it up pretty well I imagine. You have to admire Ferrari for turning redundant machinery into such an enormous money spinner. Nobody else would be able to do that I reckon. Almost every one of those cars represents a million dollar plus purchase cheque with ongoing mega $ upkeep. I read an article on Ron's McLaren operation. They don't sell old race cars or parts after they are superseded. They are nearly all stored in a specialised warehouse. Many are broken down into components for storage; but can be re-assembled if needed. Some less than stellar cars have been destroyed instead of stored; but the majority are still retained.

So today I decided to see how far I could get before security stopped me... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Didn't do anything except open the gate when I was leaving, quite ridiculous. I had no visible credentials or anything.
Wednesday is always a fairly 'cruzy' day and you would be surprised to see where you can get to especially when the AMG test day, Medical and Safety Car practice is finished and there is two hours of down time whilst the teams (F1 & other categories) as well as FIA do their track inspection by foot.
