I really do hope so.... Eventually, some time in the future? http://www.worldcarfans.com/112031442359/after-rally-test-kubica-drives-kart-
Mark, I know you are a big supporter of Kubica and I respect that. However it would be nothing short of a miracle if he had a comeback. Nannini with a much cleaner/ simpler cut never came back. And just last week Alguersari reported that Kubica can't raise a glass with his right hand. The gokart report leaves out a lot of details so it doesn't really instill confidence. After all non shifter karts can be driven with just one hand.
Sorry but I agree with this Kubica IMO will never drive an F1 car again, he was a great driver but will never be seen again driving an F1 car in anger.
+1 As for: Briatore recalled former Benetton driver Alessandro Nannini, who badly injured his arm in a helicopter crash in 1990. "He hurried back and we all know how that ended," said Briatore. I seem to recall that Nannini's arm was completely severed and that his being unable to regain the full use of the arm after microsurgery was all to do with the extent of the injury and not to do with the speed of his recovery. (Most unlike Briatore to get the facts wrong! )
Yup. Nannini crashed his helicopter on landing right in front of a bunch of party guests at his villa in Italy (IIRC). Those guests (while being shocked) acted immediately and correctly: They had him taken to the nearest hospital and wrapped his severd arm in plastic and put it on ice (which used to cool their drinks). So as far as horrible accidents go, this was the best and most immediate reaction anybody could get. Unlike Kubica who was in a wrecked car waiting for some ambulance and helpers trying to ply him out of the wrecked car. Nannini had much better response time by his helpers and the correct response (arm wrapped in ice) and a much cleaner cut (cleanly severed by the chopper blade) than poor Kubica with a torn arm and lots of waiting/bleeding out time in a wrecked car in the middle of an Italian village somewhere. The only thing Kubica got going for him were the advances in neuro surgery as his accident happend like 20 years past Nannini's.
Even with the advances of microvascular reconstruction, the hand an upper extremity are so incredibly complex that return of 100% function is often unattainable in an injury involving nerves and tendons. During my residency, I've reattached fingers and thumbs, and almost no one would attain 100% function unless it was a simple clean distal finger injury. The more proximal the injury (higher up on the arm), the more dismal the prognostic outcome. It is not so much the surgical repair, but more the recovery and rehab that is so difficult in hand surgery. Scarring in joints and tendons are a challenge and when a nerve is repaired, no one can predict the %recovery of that nerve. Unfortunately, when I read of early reports of Kubica's injuries in his upper extremity, I knew he would never gain full function of his arm. This is not to say he may not return to some form of racing, but F1 would be extremely challenging. We all pray for him though.
