The NFL has suspended New Orleans head coach Sean Payton for the 2012 season, and former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is banned from the league indefinitely because of the team's bounty program that targeted opposing players.

Payton should have been banned indefinitely as well in my opinion.

I saw Greg Williams being suspended and the Saints losing draft picks, but I didn't see Payton gettin suspended. I think Roger Goodell just made his point heard loud and clear.

It's appropriate that all of SE LA is in a tornado watch/warning.

Tornado Goodell does what Katrina couldn't...kills the Saints' spirit!

I guessed he'd get a suspension, but the whole season! Wow indeed!

"The buck stops with the head man" I guess - Although supposedly not "directly involved" he obviously knew what was going on, and Roger is major league pissed about it.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Brees comes across as clueless with that last statement but I get his point.

While headhunting is never appropriate I thought Payton's punishment exceeded the crime. Belichick got off pretty easy with the taping, in comparison.

Brees isn't the guy people think he is. Like he doesn't know.

My thoughts are there's a lot more known by the NFL than has been released to the media.

You mean for taping games rather than players getting paid to hurt other players? zero comparison.

The fact that both coaches broke rules is the comparison. While headhunting is worse I don't think it is exponentially worse than taping. Just my opinion.

I agree, Goodell knew he had to make a point about this, and rightfully so. Nobody deserves to have a bounty put on them, regardless of what competition there is.

I have to say that as a Rams fan, the whole spy gate thing sucked, especially considering it was the SUPER BOWL at stake. But, spying on teams and putting bounties out for bodily harm are in fact two different cans of worms.

Roger Goodell is turning this into the National FlagFootball League. If the the hits were legal it doesn't matter if somebody got $100 for making a legal hit.

They were trying to end games and potentially careers. That's unacceptable.

I agree that many of the rules are turning this into the No Fun League, but this situation isn't one of them.

    Good for Goodell.

Really? How do you know? Were you in the players heads and know what they were thinking when they made the hits ? Seems to me a multi million dollar contract is a bigger motivator than $100 or $1000 for a one time sack, so the whole NFL is a pay for performance scheme.

Folks have been getting bonuses for knocking people out of the game for at least 30 years. I know of an individual, who I won't name, who got 5k (1980 money) for knocking out a quarterback, breaking his ribs. It's a tough sport.

There's no doubt that this has been going on long before it became public, I'm beginning to wonder if this is going to turn into the NFL's version of the steroid scandal...

It's one thing when players are doing it (most people know that has always gone on). But when coaching staff is involved as much as the Saints were it's a problem. It's an even bigger problem when the "bounty" is to have players carted off the field. That's just flat out wrong.

It's my feeling the NFL is doing this to protect themselves. They're already being sued by former players saying the league knew of the effects of concussions. What's to say they wouldn't be sued by someone in years to come by a player who was the target of a bounty saying the league knew about it but did nothing to stop it?

I think it was mainly because Payton LIED about his knowledge of it - and tried to cover it up - and lied some more.

You are comparing 'secret taping' with 'intent to injure'?
    REALLY?
    ARE YOU SERIOUS?

There you go again, oh clueless one.
Can you not see the difference between a cheap shot that takes a guy out of a game vs. a clean shot that takes a guy out of the game?

Go watch the New Orleans/Minnesota playoff game, and then take a look at the hit Michael Boley put on Tony Romo that broke his collarbone and ended his season.
Boley'***** was a CLASSIC form tackle - they cannot teach it any better.
Now look at some of the hits the Saints' put on Favre - no comparison.
SOME were clean hits, but a handful of them were not. That's the difference.

I've been in the NFL locker rooms, I know what goes on, I've 'partied' with NFL players - a handful are good friends - a couple are in the Hall of Fame - I know what they are thinking, and I know why they are thinking the way they do. I also have to add not all players are like that, only a few were, but it happens.
The contract they sign isn't usually impetus enough, which doesn't make sense, but for some reason you throw a measily $1,000 or $2,000 then it becomes a wager, a bet, a contest between players just to see if you can win the bet, to shut up the guys egging you on. It's not even the money, really, that's just the bargaining chip. Players just enjoy taking someones' money from them - to be able to prove they CAN, the amount isn't the big deal.

    Correct on both counts.

The difference is the Saints took it to a whole new level.

Did they NEED to even do that?
Why would you need to offer an incentive to 'play harder', for lack of a better term?

Part of the crackdown is the NFL is looking to where they will be in 20-25 years from now.
Are parents pushing their kids into less violent sports today? The answer is yes.

Maybe folks cannot see this, but up until the late-80's/early 90's, boxing was HUGE, and where is it today? All-but non-existent, and certainly irrelevant. The NFL doesn't want to see that happen to them as well.

When Rich Eisen was interviewing the commissioner yesterday and he brought up an email that was sent to Peyton from what I understand, an outside person not associated with the NFL to take out Aaron Rogers.

That's just one example of why Payton's gone for the season.
