Reverse wont engage on my 360 F1

    Hi Guys , I am looking for some help with a problem that has recently reared its head so to speak on my '04' 360 F1. It has decided not to engage the reverse though the forward gears are OK.
    It seams to be happening after some heavy driving and has then sorted itself out once the engine cools.
    I thought I had seen this problem discussed some time back but can't find that thread now.The dealer is suggesting all sorts of things over the phone and I will take it in in a couple of days for him to give it a look. Is it likely to be the F1 pump as he suggests or a dreaded sign of a clutch on the way out?

    mine does this at times when the clutch is hot. Stick it into first and engage reverse from there.

    Thanks for the tip to try to get reverse to engage from 1st I will try it tomorrow when I next drive it.
    It does not completely solve the problem as to why this has suddenly started and how to resolve the problem rather than finding a way to live with it.

    The clutch PIS is set too low. Once the car gets hot and everything expands the clutch drags. When you try and select reverse the RPM sensor in the gearbox indicates the shaft is turning and won't allow selection of reverse. That's why it's fine when it's cold....

    I had the same problem. Failed switch. Don't try to live with it, the tricks stopped working. Get it looked at.

    Make sure that the switch in the reverse sending unit operates properly. I've had a simar issue and had to replace the reverse lever. The switch that the lever operates is equally flimsy as the lever itself.

    search the forum to find out about replacing the lever in ther reverse control unit instead of the pricey control unit as a whole.

    Yep, that always works for me when I cant get R from N. The only time this happens is if I have been running her hard, and she is hot. Never a problem if she is cool.

    Yes, this too is correct. I intentionally have the PIS set a little low, as I spend 99% of my time going forward, and I like the quick gear engagement feel a lower PIS allows. I will live with the occasional R fom 1 as a tradeoff.

    Point of Initial Slippage - basically the "kiss" point for the clutch.

    I agree, it makes a big difference to shift speed with a very low PIS. You should be aware, though, that if you put your car into first and it creeps from standstill, you have rpm in the 'box that shouldn't be there. I've stripped 3 'boxes now that have damaged synchro's because of this.....

    Hi guys,
    I have been to my local dealer who plugged in the SD-2 and checked the PIS which was 4.5 and he opened it out all the way to 5.8, apparently fully open and checked the error codes which were clear , surprisingly even as my first time there did it on the spot and for free ( big thanks to Barbagello's in Perth Oz).
    I have not had the reverse problem again but have not driven the car hard and will post if the problem recurs.

    Hi All,

    I have the same thing with mine, strange thing is that it only won't engage reverse when the engine is cold....when I have driven for 10 minutes it is fine until the engine cools down completely . Any ideas? Dealer is talking about expensive potentiometer meters / sensors...?

    Hi Eddie, just to clarify, the test is
    - car at a standstill on a level road
    - engine at idle (no throttle)
    - press the brake pedal, shift from neutral to first, release brake pedal
    - if car creeps forward, PIS is too low

    Correct? Should this be done with the transmission cold or warmed up?

    I am not an expert but my understanding of the test isn't based on being able to move the car. The test is about transfer of energy to the output shaft. You will have clutch drag, and hence load on the gearbox, long before the the car moves.

    When I had the CS TCU fitted the tech set the PIS low. When cold (higher idle speed) the car would creep in first gear on level ground. I took it back and he adjusted it so it didn't creep.

    Same thing happened to me some time ago posted about this, in my case i know the reverse lever was switching OK because from memory i would get a beeping noise but no engagement

    next day all was fine

    Rusty bits statement is the most sensible thing i have heard at this stage
