As you learned, "changing things" enough to cause new crash certification could easily run into boatloads of money.. I see an all new set of bumpers, new headlight pods to pass DOT, tons and tons of niggling legal details there.... Still, I like it and probably compared to OTHER habits, cheaper in the long run!!! From a guy who spent last weekend in a spring fed river, with a 17 y.o. who owned a boa constrictor.... I put her back.......maybe next year! The snake will be bigger too!!!
I just can't get my head round the value prop for this car. He must have done it 'just because he can'. And on that basis, why shouldn't he. It's his cash and he can spend it how he likes. I'd love to see it in the flesh even if it doesn't hit all my buttons.
Having a good look at the car, it appears there is not one body panel which is exactly stock 458 although the car retains what is without a doubt a 458 appearance. This car strikes me as a subtle 70s era throwback 458 albeit a very dear one. In 30 years will this 'Clapton' edition 458 be something incredibly special? Time will tell.
the front bonnet grill, the vent behind the door, the air boxes, the boxer trim? This thing is all boxer. They should have fashioned him some custom wheels as the 458 wheels don't fit the looks, needs wider (boxer) 5 spokes.
Thanks, Jim. Do we know if it's a manual transmission? It looks like the rear is a clamshell straight from the boxer/stratos. Cool.
Gorgeous but nutty price. If based on talent alone imagine what Stevie Ray Vaughn could have bought if still with us.
Thumbs down. It's not as good looking as a Boxer and not as good looking as a 458. Here is the video that Eric does best -- all seven minutes of it: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Th3ycKQV_4k[/ame]
You guys are just pissed because Clapton got on the internet and bagged on the last car you had built. He's like that, though, so maybe he has it comin'.
I don't think is Clapton's last $4.75 mil, if he wants to go on a car shopping spree he still can do and probably will do. He has created a unique motorcar to his unique design and tastes using one of the best platforms of chassis and engine currently available. What price can you put on that? Personally, I like it a lot and find it a far more interesting and appealing design than the Enzo rebody. Paul
Ok but why the Enzo's front lights which are way far from the original berlinetta look? If you have the money and the taste, you deserves specific BB lights, new rims and maybe a V12.
Sorry if this is repost but to me this is like jaw dropping piece of art: http://autos.yahoo.com/blogs/motoramic/close-eric-clapton-one-off-4-75-million-161221052.html
Clapton is an artist. Some folks, like me, think he is a phenomenal artist (my personal favorite). Artist's, especially one's as gifted as Clapton take risks when they create a piece. They risk time, energy and in the case of SP12-EPC almost $5MM in hopes that the result will have a positive effect on themselves and other's. SP12-EPC, as we know is a one-off collaboration between Clapton and my other favorite artist, Ferrari. Some collaboration's work well and the result stands the test of time (Cream, Blind Faith, Derek & the Dominoes, etc...) other's don't produce such an outstanding result. Most, if not all of us on Ferrari chat would revel in the opportunity to work with Ferrari Special Projects to create our own one-off Ferrari masterpiece. I hope Clapton enjoys driving his new car and continues to display it. I hope to see and hear it in person one day!
+1 You think he gives a damn what we think? Don't mention Layla when he's around!..... He used to (probably still does) show up with a couple of buddies in a pub we used to drink in (a *lot*) and jam, sometimes for hours, it was awesome! The landlord ensured that everyone was aware to never ask he do Layla - For reasons unknown he'd get pissed off and quit!...... LOL! Cheers, Ian
Finally. I thought I was the only one. This thing reminds me of a 308 body kit on a Fierro. I just can't get my head around the fact that it doesn't have a V12. I mean, that was the original PURPOSE. Why not just resto-mod a 512BB? It's been done - and well - here.
Agree as well. I actually thought it was McLaren for a second. Things were done back then for a reason, because the technology wasn't as advanced. E.g. above the rear deck the two black panels that used to cover the carbs. To go "retro", unlike the P4/5 that does it well, you have to mix the styling cues and update them to match. This adds a retro flavor that doesn't seem to "mix" with current technology. It's his money and I haven't seen it in the flesh so I may be prematurely bashing.. If I spent that kind of money, I would have engineered a 12 cylinder tub and started in the wind tunnel.
I don't get all the hate. There are very few people on this board (one comes to mind--JG) who have the balls and the $ to drop $4.75mm on a custom Ferrari. EPC got precisely what he wanted and doesn't give a **** about anyone's opinion here. God bless him.
