So I've been looking through the threads and see some references to tools needed to complete a major on a 348. I'd like to make sure I have (most) everything I need so I'm not having to run to the store to pick up a tool I don't have in my tool chest.

There are a couple of links referencing how to do the engine out service.

    Thanks Ernie

Thanks RF128706 (although this is for a 355)
    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=134793326&postcount=1

Btw --- the above post by RF128706 --- has anyone done a similar write up for the 348? When I do mine, I'm planning on video taping the entire process and writing something similar unless it's already been done. No point in re-inventing the wheel.

Ernie mentions a 12MM Allen key for the oil plug so I've included that in my list.

Here's a quick list of what I've found based on Ernie's and RF's threads and some other ones I've seen. Note, I haven't created these - just compiled them. These are in no particular order except for #1.

    1. Laptop connected to your wifi so you can be connected to FerrariChat
    2. A metric hand-tool selection is required including:
    - Two sets of spanners and sockets covering 6mm to
    24mm A/F are required.
    3. A range of cross & flat head screwdrivers.
    4. A very large adjustable spanner and alan-keys.
    5. Two good quality 6600lb (3,000kg) hydraulic jacks with a lifting
    height of approx 500mm.
    6. 2 drain trays with a capacity minimum of 6 litres and a
    height of 200mm max.
    7. Lead lamp
    8. 4 good quality 2000Kg axle stands
9.A good quality trolley (steel framed with heavy duty castors is also required. The load
capacity should be at least 750kg and measure approx 620mmx620mm. The height
should be as low as possible (250mm or lower).
    10. 2 Post or 4 post ramp with some wood posts depending upon how you decide to lift your 348.
*** See CF355's post about using a 4 post rack
    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=234071
    11. 12MM Allen Key
    12. I thought I saw somewhere (maybe Rgigante's post) about a 12MM 12pt socket which he used a grinder to grind out a specialized socket with 4 posts to remove something. Not sure that was for the major or something else.
    13. Magnetic washer retriever for the end of your socket wrench.
    14. Impact wrench
    15. Compression tester (optional)

For those of you that have done a major... what tools come to mind that aren't on this list? Anything specialized? Feel free to list things that are a worst case scenario too..

I have some of the tools on this list, but I'm sort of methodical (read anal) and want to make sure I'm ready to focus on the car (and my impending gotchas) and not on the tools.

    Thanks in advance.

    David

You forgot an air compressor. Can't run an impact wrench with no air. ;) Make sure the impact wrench you buy has very strong reverse torque.

For the crank bolt you will need an impact wrench specific socket. Regular sockets have thinner walls than impact sockets, and the walls can flex while hitting it with the impact wrench. So be sure you get an impact socket for the crank bolt.

    You will also want:

    torque wrench
    micrometer
feeler gauges (get the one's that have a bend)
    piston stop
    timing wheel
    dial indicator
a HUGE crescent wrench to get the oil line off the oil tank
a drift punch that can fit into the subframe bolt holes on the chassis, this'll help when you put the engine back in
as for the engine doll, just go buy a 1000/lb furniture doll from Home Depot or Lowe's, they are only like $20

That's all I can think of for now.

Add a 10mm to that, for the gear oil drain plug.

    Dave,
You will also need to refill the AC system after you are done. This will take a vacuum device and the hoses and gauges plus R134A to refill it. I have a set of gauges, hoses and the vacuum equipment that you can use. You will just need the R134A refirgerant and the instructions which I have.

Along with all those tools you’ll need a colorful assortment of words. I found them useful many times during my engine out service.

    Mike,

While I'm inclined to pull the AC I saw a post where someone left it hanging on a 348 avoiding a recharge.

That being said, the car in question doesn't blow real cold, so I have a feeling there's an issue there anyhow.

The compressor was in my mind just not on the initial list.

SEE? I told you I'd miss something. :)

I did mine without removing the AC unit, it really wasn't that hard. It probably would be hard without a 2 post lift. I'm not a big fan of opening up the AC circuit, especially when mine still has R12 in it.

Unfortunately I did not take any of it hanging from the body. I do remember removing the front bracket that holds it to the motor, removing the remaining bolts as well as brackets that hold the hoses to the body and lowering/swinging it out of the way so the frame would clear it as the rear subframe was lowered. Other than breaking the refrigeration circuit is would be eaiser to leave it attached to the motor and unhook the lines as described in the instructions for removing the motor.

I'm considering making the 348 plunge and will likely be doing my own maintenance as well

I don't see an O2 sensor socket, but believe me, you'll want one.

I'm going try and compile all the tools and then get my first thread edited to have them all in it.

As I get closer to this.. I've been watching the videos on YouTube on the timing belt change.

I don't necessarily want to fabricate the pullers and such. Does anyone have a list of the pullers you'd need? does Snapon or someone else make these to make the job easier? The presses too?

    Thanks.

    a. A flame wrench, like a map gas torch
    b. A mig welder for when **** breaks off and you have to weld it back together

    f. lap top so you can look at diagrams in the garage
    g. note book so you can write down what you did because assembly is reverse of disassembly sequence
