Yes, no love lost for South Korea.

Let's hope it's an exciting venue for both drivers and spectators.

Sorry, this reeks of another April fools joke to me. Your buddy Benoit again? He's never let facts cloud a nice story......

    - This is the same source that "reported" (sic) that Ricard alternating with Spa was "a done deal", right? As we now know (as much as we know anything in Bernie Land) it's a *long* way from even finding funding.
    - AFAIK there's nothing close to an F1 track in Argentina at present (?) - Please, not another street circuit......
    - Surely South Korea has something of a long-term contract with the pygmy? He's loath to pay any penalty fees - Maybe the Argentine's will pony up for that as well. ;)

I may be wrong, but next year seems like someones dream/wishful thinking to me - IIRC, even you admitted that MA is wrong about 50% of the time - That's horrendous for a so called "news source" - *Zero* credibility IMO - Even PF1 gets it right most of the time, and they suck too IMO.......

    Cheers,
    Ian

Benoit is Blick, this is motorsport-aktuell.

They are actually building a track about 400 km outside of Buenos Aires. It is not a street circuit.

I didn't say that about Motorsport-aktuell. I would say that about Benoit's rumors.

The article is based on a report by "Autosprint".

I thought South Korea had a 4 year contract? Too bad if it's true as I was planning on heading to that one at some point. My wife is Korean (American born) so she was really geeked about it.

    Fair enough, my bad.

I guess that's something!..... Do "we" know how far along it is? Another Tilke dome?

Again, I stand corrected. However, wasn't it Florian who said Autosprint was pretty much rubbish (from a facts perspective) too?

I'll believe it when I see it (in Autosport ;)) is I guess my point.

    Cheers,
    Ian

The article is somewhat fuzzy about the timeline. They talk about 2013 but it is not clear to me that South Korea is already off for next year.

Knowing how Bernie plays these things my guess is, that both races will be scheduled for next year and if Argentina doesn't get funded, Bernie gets the penalty fee and South Korea a reprieve.

So if you want to see that race, I suggest you make travel plans for this or next year. Beyond 2013 it is most likely a goner.

I believe it when I see it on TV.

You are right, there are a lot of moving parts to next year's and 2014's calendar. Lots of new tracks (France, NY, Sochi, Argentina) and lots of tracks on shaky ground (Korea, Austin, Valencia, Turkey, Bahrain).

Personally I liked the races in South Korea but a race in our hemisphere has the advantage of watching it live vs taped. We'll see how it all pans out or not.

    According to wikipedia;

If true, and I believe it is, they should be going there thru at least 2016.

OTOH, we know the value of contracts in F1 if the Pygmy wants out.......

Yes and in this case my feeling is the whole vision somewhat collapsed: This GP was supposed to jump start the infrastructure/business in that part of South Korea and apparently it hasn't done that.

So Bernie might have a clause in the contract that guarantees the full duration only if infrastructure around the track improves by such and such date and OTOH the government might not be willing/able to endlessly subsidize a race without getting the desired effect in economic growth.

France had similar plans and Magny-Cours never delivered. Until the GP was pulled.

John same here. My wife has not been back to Korea since we married and was looking forward to the race. Planning on going but we have Paris in October so might miss the race if we go in late October/early November.

But on a side note... why the hell did they pick that place to build a track?!!!! A lot of country outside of Seoul/Incheon.

Actually they have a beautiful F1 track from the 90s halfway between downtown & the airport.

Mar Del Plata is a wierd place for an F1 race. The town has gone WAY down hill, the crowds there are mostly brokeazz greasers.

If they do it there it will have to be between Jan & March as its too cold rest of the year and I cant see them finishing anything let alone a track of this magnitude there by Jan 2013. The under the table payoffs will be in the 10s of millions $USD

The real $ in SA goes to Punta Del Este, Urugauy or even better Miami Beach or Ibiza

Did he? That would be... well, unusual, to put it mildly!

Who is the backer of the Korean circuit? I thought the gov't was involved? I wonder what Bernie's motive would be to reduce their fee?

Some have mentioned that Korea has a contract. They do. But I've read lots of articles that state they lost tens of millions on the deal. One article pointed out the cost of the track, the annual running costs, Bernie's fee, and the revenue from ticket sales. The loss per year was tens of millions. I may be remembering inaccurately, but I want to say it was $85MM per year in costs and something like $30MM per year in revenues, leaving a $55MM hole.

This is what makes it easy to break contracts.... Bernie just says "well, I can let you out of the contract for a one-time fee of $20MM if you like?" (or something to that effect). Then goes to Argentina instead.

FWIW, I would guesstimate that Argentina would be a fantastic venue. And, we really need more GP's in S. America. They have a huge F1 fan base.
