Interested in a Range Rover....need info

I think if you try a couple of different searches, you'll find a LOT of opinions; many of the them extremely negative! There are a couple of years that seem to be most problematic (08 may be one....). Good luck! Our last RR was a 96; it was pretty good, but we sold that for an Audi AllRoad, and then onto an RS4 Avant. Still have a '95 Disco; been a perfect car since new.

 

Most of these "negative" opinions are from people who have seen them on the road but never driven or owned them or those who bought them with 100k miles and expected trouble free ,no maintenance ride.....

 

Had AN 06 RR. NIGHTMARE beyond all belief. Never never never even think about one. Like marrying an ex hooker. Looks good, drives fine for several years, then kawham! Out of the blue leaves you stranded on the highway and wanting $15K to keep things going.

That being said, my son has an 09 Sport. Loves it. Occassional electronic glitches, radio, nav... but when truck is restarted everything is cured.

Our 09 Cayanne GTS is a much better SUV. Faster, smoother, more reliable...
If you could do a blindfolded drivers comparison, the Porsche would win hands down.

Both Land Rover and Jaguar are owned by Tata motors of India, and since the ownership change the quality has gotten better.

Ford was broke and Tata has deep pockets.

Having said that - the sport is the nicer looking of the 2, and very reliable

I've had a 2004 since new, and two earlier series since 1984. The 2004 is one of the finest vehicles I've ever owned.

Anecdotally it seems that build quality and reliability diminished drastically after the engine was changed to Jaguar in 2006. Earlier trucks like mine have BMW engines, and build quality at that time was comparable to BMW.

In an age of rising beltlines the RR has a wonderful openness, and IMO the interior and exterior aesthetics are unrivaled. The on and off road driving qualities are superior to any comparable vehicle I've owned or rented. It's a great city car because of its compactness, visibility and ride comfort, and it is often also my choice for long distance travel. It has been perfect for towing my 20' enclosed trailer, sometimes coast-to-coast.

The only non-routine service in more than eight years was due to a known design defect, the front differential input splines (http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdetails/drivetrain/frontdiff.html), and I was unhappily stranded. Although the car was out of warranty the dealer covered the cost of the tow and performed the repair gratis. I suspect that most trucks still on the road have had this repair, but if not it should be done preemptively.

The telematics in 2004 were primitive but can be somewhat upgraded (e.g. integrated iPod connection) with aftermarket kits for E39 series BMWs. My teenage sons agree that the sound quality of the audio system is the best in our experience, only my CL600 comes close.

If Tata screws up the new one I might keep it forever.

 

We had a 2004 RR HSE with the BMW engine in it and it ran just fine. Do get warranty as we had one of the air suspensions fail which can be quite expensive. But other than that, it was a great car.
We now have a 2012 LR4, and it's been fantastic!

 

I have a 06 (bought new) HSE sitting in my drivway, has 33K miles on it and for the most part has be a great car. I think 06 was the last year for the BMW engine and the BMW type front seats (which are really comfortable) and the larger screens in back of the headrests.

 

Own an '06 HSE Supercharged (45K miles). No major problems. I did my homework before buying and between Ford and BMW, they sorted out the electrical and suspension issues by '06. Anything after that point ought to be alright. Tata took over a pretty good product and really has only aesthetically improved on it.

While I can empathize with those who've had bad experiences with RRs (this is my second RR, the first being a Country WAAAAY back in the late '80s...that was a NIGHTMARE), I have had no complaints with this one.

It's somewhat pricey to maintain and does require regular maintenance. You will go through brake pads, rotors and tires due to the weight, but other than that it's run like a swiss watch for me.

I owned one....hated the damn thing! Looked good, but EVERYTHING important failed, left me stranded and pissed many times, there are better choices! One of the few auto experiences that was just plain miserable!

 

I have a 2012 Range Rover Sport Supercharged. I love it! Got it in November 2011 and I haven't had any problems. It's good-looking and very fast. I had the previous version (2009) and I liked it very much as well.
