Don't underestimate the importance of quality protective racing gear.

I'm wondering what the safety guy had on his to-do list that was more important than keeping the driver's head from bouncing off the ground as he woke up.

I woke up one time wandering around the pits, didn't know how I got there. People who have hit their heads can be counted on to act and move in goofy ways.

While he was standing, he did not quite "walk away". In fact this crash ended his career, with the biggest injury coming from the melted visor coming in contact with his face.

This was my recollection, too. Did not walk away. Never raced again. BIG lawsuit.

For me, this crash is up there with the Barbazza/Dale T-bone at RA.

Face it: driving a race car has its risks despite modern safety technology. I would think everyone living in this fast lane is somewhat prepared. The risk of death in this profession is higher than average than for others in the same pay scale. Sometimes a major crash produces a miracle survival story but not always. Racing would not be so popular without risk of death.

The other guy had only a broken leg and managed to get out of the car in time.

I titled the post after being stunned and amazed when the Ferrari driver got up and walked (OK, he stumbled): I thought for sure he'd been killed and I couldn't believe he not only survived, but could get up under his own power.

His car had been burning so intensely that I never expected him to make it.
