Cleaning up my shift mechanism on my ‘79 GTB. The cup that holds the side load spring looks like it has wear, or…… is it normal to have this chamfer on it?

The ball at the end of the shift rod was not dry, so it is hard to imagine this wore down, also no sign of metal in the grease. If not seen any other photos that I could see this. Looks like it would help with assembly.

What is the story for this little part?

Not sure why it is different, but it looks like the part in Robzworkz shifter rebuild thread. Like most things Ferrari – they probably changed the design, but not all the drawings. I can’t tell from those photos if the chamfer is in the part.

Thanks for the great photos, Ron. My shifter is starting to feel like there's some friction going on at the base of the lever. Time to crack mine open and get everything clean and lubricated.

Well they do look alike accept for the wear pattern. Perhaps since your there you may want to replace it. It lists at Trutlands for ~$30.00.

Yeah, when I look at Rob’s photos a little closer – looks like he has a polished spot, but nothing like what is on mine. As I think about it more – the cup has no key to keep that angled surface oriented. So it would be random installation – that makes no sense.

I’ll order up a new one.

Because I believe it is Part 15 that the photo depicts.

AND I believe it needs to be replaced.

But then again, after looking for the 50th time, maybe not. Could be just a part change w/o a corrisponding pic change as someone above mentioned. I would still replace it.

And typical. There were many changes to many parts through the years. What the cars have and the part's manuals show are frequently different. Parts changed, part numbers not necessarily. ...

When you move the lever through the gears, are you feeling a lot of rubbing at the base of the shifter, like I am?

Then let me restate my comment to read:

Wow! That puts a new light on an old issue!

Thank you for the reminder that the documentation may vary from what is in your hand at any time!

It's part 11 in the figure - 15 is a plastic bushing inside the conical spring- still on my shift lever in the photos.

I'm replacing it, but I've tried a couple of places - have not found one yet.

It was smooth still, but felt a little "gummy." Most of the parts still had grease on them, but it was clear that it was time to clean this up and put in fresh lube. My interior and console is out, so .... Glad I checked. The other typical wear areas are the holes in the aluminum housing the shaft slides through. Mine are fine - no play in the shaft.

If you do this - there is a lot of advice in Rob's post (in the tech stickies). Also warnings about getting the selectors out of sync in the trans, requiring the pan to be dropped to line it all back up again. I hope to avoid that.

I wonder if Ron's part wore to the point that the nipple fell out? Looking at the close-up shots of his part, it looks like there is a small lip on the inside, maybe the remains of a closed end?

I was thinking the same thing. But, there would have been the broken piece (nipple) left in the shift box and other's threads with pictures don't show the nipples. Now I must admit I like to see nipples don't get me wrong I am just not sure that the part always had them or maybe in later years it was changed as Dave has suggested.

I wonder what the purpose of the nipples were and why they changed the design? Just another little mystery in the long list of mysteries from the "Why did they do that files?" of Ferrari. But hey it has now been documented here on fchat.

That is interesting. I guess that, once again, they wanted to keep it exciting for us :) The investigative/historical aspect of owning this car is always interesting to me. It's like Italian car archaeology or forensics. The hand-built "on the fly" aspect which can be annoying as hell, but which is also pretty cool.

If you're going to have a nipple, you will need a recess in your shaft.

    :D:D:D

Ron needs to replace the part...it's worn at an angle.

The bottom button is a hard-to-find part. If I ever need to get one, I'll fab it out of UHMW.

Great photos. I was thinking....without that nipple/pin on the end of the plug, what's to keep the lever from being pushed up and out of position by the reverse lockout spring?
