Is there any way to verify the accuracy of a 348 odometer reading? For example, does the main engine module record mileage independent of the odometer; for that matter, is the odometer mechanical or electronic.
Talking to a gentleman who has a 1994 348 Spider for sale; Autocheck shows a history of mileage in the 40,000 range through the nineties, and, all of a sudden, car has an odometer reading of 29,500 in November of 2011, which matches the approximate odometer reading currently. No surprise there are no docs, receipts or other records that support any mileage readings. Gentleman is a recent purchaser. Thanks for your collective thoughts.

Sounds like a classic rollback. I don't know a lot about the specific workings of the 348 odometer but this one sounds like it walks and talks like a duck.

I was in a similar situation when I was in the market for a 348.

I found one with an odometer reading discrepancy and the advice I got was pretty simple: walk away, you will forever have that hanging over your head that will come back to haunt you in the future.

Of course, if there is documented proof from the MTO with a reasonable explanation as to why (ie the 40,000 was in kilometres and the 29,500 is in miles), otherwise take the same advice that I took.

When I was looking at my 348 for the first time, the speedo had failed at 12K miles. It was replaced by Ferrari of Beverly Hills (where it was originally bought). They had all of the documentation to show everything was on the level. The salesman told me right from the start that the mileage was lower than actual by 12K when I first looked at the car. So there was never any attempt to conceal it. Since everything was documented, I did not have a problem with that. But I would be concerned about the 348 you are considering if there is no documentation to show why the mileage dropped. That sounds fishy to me as well.

I have had some issues with carfax in the past on vehicle I bought new, one of which was titled in another state and passed emission tests. It was never in that state and another the mileage was half what it should have been. On autocheck the mileage was correct but did say it was titled in another state as carfax said. Like I said I had said vehicle since new and did not take it when it was 2 years old and move to another state and back to California. I guess the data input is only as the person reporting it

Just do your homework on the vehicle and you will be fine

If your check shows a "history" of mileage readings at 40,000 + miles (as you state), it seems pretty obvious that the current reading is incorrect.

The speedometer and odometer on the 348 are electronically operated - there is no mechanical drive cable.

I have never heard that the Motronic units on 348's are capable of recording miles driven.
