I'm buying a 288 at the moment, and agree with your analysis Jim

Yes, absolutely. Today's buyers are enthusiasts and want to drive them, enjoy them, and share them. Maybe even be seen in them.

The people I'm dealing with are all cash buyers, and are not buying impulsively - they have followed the market a long time, have longed for cars like these, and are quite knowledgeable about the cars & the market in general.

As you know, these factors bode well for any market, and I'd cautiously say the market is strong.

There seems to be a sense amongst them of keeping the cars long-term, and a sense that they'd better move now because nice examples are getting harder to find. This is especially true of 288 GTOs which are relatively rare. Perhaps there is a sense that economically things might start to move forwards and these collectibles will surge in value.

As you hopefully know by now, I act to try & keep things sensible between buyer & seller and I'm not about to subscribe to any notion of a booming market. I think some 'corrections' are taking place, but that's all, nothing more.

And yes, I agree there is a sense amongst buyers (and all of us quite frankly), that although future generations will inherit some challenges, but by and large they inherit a much more affluent situation compared to 40 or 60 years ago. So what are we holding back for? They're gonna get a free Enzo anyway!

Thats a shame. Some of the highlights of my youth (aka, 10 years ago), involved borrowing one of my father's vintage sports cars to hit some local county/mountain roads. They weren't the fastest cars, but that wasn't the point, I wouldn't have traded those experiences/moments for anything.

 

At 16 I could not wait to get my license. Today, my nephews are hitting 20 and 22 - only one has a license and neither drives hardly at all. These are the times......more space on the road for enthusiasts.

 

I also think it has to do with less cetainity of positive returns from the market. Now that the markets have recovered (relatively speaking) from the lows of 2008, future returns dont seem as attractive so high networth individuals might be more inclined to spend the money elsewhere.

 

wait a sec ... you mean these things can be driven?

I noticed a slight change too. Before December, Dallas had one Enzo (that I know of) that was yellow. Then in December we got 2 within 2 weeks- a red and a black. I don't know if they are driven, but I sure hope they will be.
I don't know of any 288 GTOs but those seem to go under the radar a bit more and are done behind closed doors I bet.

I like to hear about people driving these things because I bet they are a ton of fun to drive and they get to enjoy them to the next level IMO.

Do you think that people are buying these as investments or at least assuming they won't depreciate? If this is too off topic, then PM please.

 

Of course anyone who has accumulated the resources to be able to afford any of these cars always calculates the downside or potential upside but I'm confident that the people I'm dealing with are simply fulfilling dreams they've harbored for a while.

Yes, indeed I can confirm that just because one has purchased a used Supercar does NOT put one automatically in line for the Enzo replacement... I can also confirm that none of my clients have bought with this in mind.

 

Enzo might come in handy for those who do, though, as they won't have to deal w/that fossil of a clutch pedal.

Could be even some of the current crew just coming into cars like these, 25-35, didn't grow up rowing their own (as cars go) - and so gravitate to something along the lines of an Enzo?
