Greetings! Thought all would like to see the latest project. This 77 Boxer is getting a major service, clutch, brakes and interior refreshing. Basically a mild restoration before the car will come available for sale this summer. We've been very busy here at the shop but thought we could post a project for you to follow along this time. If you haven't had a chance, click on the website URL below and have a look around. Take care and check back often! i'll follow this one with great interest...i hope it goes smoothly for all involved. she certainly needs some love... i took you up on your offer...and i'm glad i did...that's my kind of shop...beautiful.
Are you still happy with yours Brett? I was at John Scotti around March 15 and I only saw a 512BB that was in need of full resto with the engine out.(already sold) Was yours at the Lambo dealer or at the Muscle car place? My friend is interrested in a 512BB but he just bought a Diablo from Scotti instead. I think if he would have seen the one you bought at that price it would have been a done deal for him.
still happy ? yes, thankfully, 6 days deep and i'm still happy. this car was at the Provencher (muscle car) location.
Needs TLC for sure. Are your aluminum airbox lids painted on the outside and natural inside? I see it has the fiberglass housings.
While I understand that a lot of people claim than a BB512 outperforms a BB512i, even those folks have to agree that the BB512i engine looks much better than the BB512 engine.
Until you take the carb covers off. Carbs look cool! Just look at this 365 engine, basically the same as the 512BB engine (ok I would never run mine like that because too much dirt gets into the engine, but you have to admit it looks pretty amazing). Onno Image Unavailable, Please Login
Webers do look fantastic. As I stared, I could almost smell the fuel. My vote for aesthetics? Airboxes off: Webers. Airboxes on: Injection runners. Can't wait to watch this 77 come back to life. Hearing more about Boxers being resurrected lately. Mighty fun and interesting to see. My 84 is due for belts soon and I'm contemplating options...
A BB512 engine does look better with the air boxes off. But, how long does that take to do? And, you can't really drive your Boxer like that on public roads, at least for long without risking damage. With my BB512i, I can open the rear bonnet at any time to look at or display to others the gorgeous look of its flat-12 engine with those 12 runners and two plenums. Plus, for someone like me that likes to drive my Ferrari, the drivability and low speed torque of the BB512i makes it worth it to me. After all, how many times would I actually remove the air boxes just to look at the engine to only have to reinstall them to take a Sunday drive?
you have an awesome car, but do you really need to explain the exact same thing in virtually every post ? even in a thread that's about a carbed car ? after 11 years, i think everybody knows where you stand on this...we get it.
Ive seen one like that too - here is a photo I took in late 80's in UK - Giallo Boxer ? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes you're right, I had EFI in mind. But I still prefer carbs. I just bought a moderately high miles FI that I will compare with my carbs.
Here are some good shots of an engine coming out. Just in case anyone wanted to see how it's done. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Does anybody know when this upgraded bell housing first appeared? In the Last picture the one on the left is from 21171 a 1977 and the other is 20153 a 1976. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
You were able to leave the water piping with the motor the way the factory does. I got a little nervous lifting my engine out, possible ran out of ceiling height and ability to tilt, so I removed all the water pipes AND the bell housing / transfer case. Did you have to adjust the angle and fore - aft position constantly during the lift?
Clearance issues can always be a little nerve racking. Yes I had to adjust at four different times during the removal process.
