After 2 years, last week I said good-bye to my early 2010 (Aug 2009) Cali. I'll will miss it - was getting worried about the warranty running out in summer (it had its share of little issues) so decided not to ship it back home for summer and sell it in florida.

I didn't shop it around or negotiate...just took it to a dealer, and I was pleasantly satisfied with how well the value held up ...16.7% depreciation over 2 years. No complaints given that I was not buying anything else from them and I was late on the service.

I'll see how long I can hold out...already visiting the Ferrari site looking at that 2013...so hard to resist!

Congratulations on the sale and thanks for sharing the data point. Did the dealer buy it from you or sell it for you on consignment?

Hope you stick around the forum.

Thanks - will do. Sort of consigned...sales manager offered me 5k less for cash and I said I'd give him a week...he sold it within a few days.

And, this will make you feel good!...he had two other 2010's on the floor - a blue and a grey. He told me mugello/cuoio would be an ez sell...and apparently it was!

I would like all the California haters in 2008 to go back and look at their posts of how they believed that anyone buying a California was an idiot because they would be half priced in a year.

I don't think there has been a car more chastised at it's introduction than the California. Even the FF got less.

Well, those haters can go take a hike. CA's have held their values where the mighty "macho" manly Scuds have dropped like a stone.

I stand by my original prediction: The CA will become Ferrari's most popular first time buyer car of all time.

It's fast, it's comfortable, its reliable, it's low maintenance, it's a convertible and a coupe, it's attractive, it's user friendly, it sounds great, and its being built in reasonable numbers so many can find one easily.

I love it when the so-called "experts" are wrong!

I have a 2010 White / Cuoio heavily optioned California with 8k miles in mint condition that I'm thinking of trading in and picking up a 458

Thanks for sharing. Do you mind also sharing how the economics of consignment worked versus the $5K less to sell directly to the dealer? I guess the dealer doesn't tie up working capital or risk getting stuck with inventory, but gets paid a smaller consignment fee/commission than the markup he would have made had he bought/resold? I'm curious because my attention has shifted from a 250/275/330 of some sort to a 458 spider, and I'm debating starting a conversation with my sales guy about letting him sell my car to see if it helps move me up the list faster, and I do wonder if depreciation will accelerate once the updated model is out. But I'd like to enjoy the car at least thru the summer.

You & I always knew mugello/cuoio would be a great combo for a California! :)

You described my selection criteria perfectly, except you forgot that it can also fit 2 kids in the back! :)

In my case, the dealer was clear that the benefit was cash management...it was worth something to hold off payment until he got the money. However, he was prepared to guarantee the amount coming from consignment before he had a buyer.

In my mind your depreciation concern is right...but I suspect the pressure comes as much from impending warranty expiration (for 2009's and 10's) as the new model being available. In your case, I recall you have something like 18 months worth of warranty left (?), so you should still have some room.

On the other hand, it's all a guessing game - and at the end of the day, is $10-15k of further depreciation going to make a difference in terms of buying that 458 - I doubt it!

Interestingly enough a very different story in the UK. I have a very well specced late 2009 car and looks like it will have dropped about 30%+ as have most, and buyers appear few at present, possibly due to the strange weather.

I've already lost about $50k on my car in Canada. But to be honest, part of that is due to the higher Canadian dollar. MSRP's have dropped over the past 1-2 years.

Mine was only moderately optioned (and still under warranty for another few months) - Daytonas, power seats, magneride, afs, cruise, 20's, shields, calipers and a few leather bits...about $25k worth. No carbon fiber or driving zone or camera and the like...I would guess the higher the spec is the harder it is to get it back at re-sale.

I guess the best way to avoid depreciation issues is to keep the car. Are you really going to notice the H.P. bump? Lighter weight? Seems to me these are just marketing teasers by Ferrari (or any other car company for that matter) to sucker the ego into another purchase. Worried about the warranty issue - buy the power cube extension. This solves the warranty concern for up to ten additional years.

Good to hear. I did pretty well trading out of the two calis I have owed also. They are fantastic, versatile cars.

+1000..took the words out of my mouth....the haters were out in full force in 08 and they implied the Cali was blasphamous as were the morons who bought them. I was hoping they were right about the depreciation as I would have loved to pick one up at half price...but they were wrong...

Nice to hear about the (lack of) depreciation on the California. However it really doesn't concern me in any case. Mines green and, therefore, unsellable (or depreciation = 100%). This also doesn't conern me. I love my car so much that I intend (right now) to keep it until I die, at which point the depreciation will be someone else's problem :)

When you consider that a lease of a S550 Mercedes or a CL550 for three years might cost you $60,000+ having similar depreciation on a California is OK by my book. These are cars to enjoy, not to consider an investment!

Advertise it at list price, and you may find a sucker to buy it, or you may sit on it forever. Give some depreciation and it will sell in a couple heartbeats ... my 2010 did, making garage (and bank) room for my 2012.

Not just leases...I have a 1 year old S63 and I would guess a trade-in might get 2/3rds of list (which was 150ish). It really makes you appreciate how relatively affordable a Cali is to own...ok, it ain't a Camry, but compared to an Aston, Bentley, R8, etc., it's a "blue-light" special!

My neighbor was going to buy a Maserati Gran Turismo almost 3 years ago. I talked her out of it and into a Cali instead. My reasoning was that even though it was a lot more expensive than the Maser the Cali would depreciate less. Maserati almost re-defines depreciation.

I did get this one right. She loves the Cali and I have driving rights whenever I want. Good deal all the way around!!!

Excellent point Rick. I also feel the Cali coming in new at a lower price point helps because you starting at a lower price so therfore it will not depreciate as much. A much more expensive car usually depreciates faster because because most people looking can afford a new one if the used is too close in price. The price point of the Cali has opened it up to many more buyers on the new end which is turn had opened it up to many more on the used end so you have the demand strong on the used end. The reviews have shown the Cali to be reliable and easy to maintain which also adds to its appeal. When I am talking price it is all relative of course. Being a hardtop conv. ferrari is the main reason though IMO. If the california was a coupe only you would see them deprciate at lease 1.5X what they are now if not more.
