I don't know if this is the most appropriate place to post but it is a question relating to Ferrari in 1964 so "Vintage" seemed about right!

I am in the throes of recreating Jaguar's stillborn Le Mans racer - the XJ13 - which should have competed in 1966/67 against the likes of Ferrari and Ford. The project is documented here http://www.xj13.eu

During my research came across a reference to a 1964 conversation between Jaguar and someone named "Mr Hodkinson" who may have been involved with Ferrari's Le Mans racing endeavours in the mid-1960s. It is possible he wasn't directly employed by Ferrari but may have been a supplier of braking components.

I have a copy of a 1964 Jaguar memo which says, "Mr Hodkinson has informed me that ventilated discs are being made to be tested by Ferrari soon" and "Mr Hodkinson has promised to send an assembly drawing ... which are to be used on the new prototype Ferrari for 1965"

I am solely interested in the development of Jaguar's XJ13 and their studies on their perceived competition and don't wish to embarrass this gentleman if he is still around! Does the name ring any bells with any of you?

I would also be interested to know what the "new prototype Ferrari for 1965" may have referred to?

As it's a British name I suspect H was with Dunlop. Ferrari was developing the P 3 in 65/66 and the first one was 0846 which had inboard ventilated brakes.

    Thanks for the quick replies!

Yes - Dunlop makes a lot of sense as Jaguar were very close to them. I've just worked out how to add images so here is the memo itself:

Just in case there is confusion here, for a short period Dunlop made more than things like tires and tennis balls. They were in the disc brake business.More knowledgeable than I can fill us in on the details. I believe Girling was already involved with building disc brakes for the aircraft industry when the auto racing fraternity started to get interested. tongascrew

Yes - absolutely correct. However, to read various histories of Jaguar you could be forgiven in believing that they developed the disc brakes using their C-Types almost single-handed. I suspect Harold Hodkinson had a very significant role and it is such a shame he passed away only in 2006. I would have dearly liked to speak with him and record his and Dunlop's contribution to the use of the disc-brake in cars - 'cos I am sad like that

This is getting to be a recurring theme with my personal project as many of the people originally involved are well into their 80s now and I am desperately trying to record as much about these people while I still can!
