Anyone seen it? How does it look?
You mean the so-called P12? Personally I didn't. Nor I do know when and where it will be unveiled. My idea: they're trying to guess Ferrari's moves with their Enzo successor. Or maybe the new car is ready, who knows...
no doubt mclaren and ferrari will play cat and mouse on thier comparable / competing models....only valid thing online i found is this spy shot? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
the back end of the spy shot indicates some interesting features...a roof intake scoop, a lower drooped tail with an integrated spoiler?...articles say that a KERS system is expected Image Unavailable, Please Login
this link speculates the P12 will be more likely a pumped up variation of the MP4-12C, with KERS? that would be kinda lame http://www.worldcarfans.com/112050844114/mclaren-p12-f1-successor-speculatively-rendered Image Unavailable, Please Login
It's a shame they didn't go for the central driving position again. That was one of the key elements that made the original McLaren F1 an automotive legend. All the best, Andrew.
I am far more excited to see this car, than the Enzo successor! Anyone know the price point? For this car or the Enzo successor.
No, it wasn't. It was the advanced aerodynamics, down force generation, low weight, low polar moments of inertia, advanced suspension, legendary BMW motor, space-age carbon fibre body, pioneering of low-volume manufacturing techniques, performance, power to weight and other ratios, crashworthiness, etc., etc. The central seating position was certainly unique, helped with even weight distribution, and allowed for two more passengers to be squeezed into a space that would normally only accommodate one, but it wasn't anywhere near the top 100 reasons that made the original McLaren F1 an automotive legend. The driver's seat could have been on one side, and the car would still occupy the exact same place in automotive history.
Somewhat nice to look at, but it is only speculation at this point. Worthless artists' impressions and automotive journo conjecture. We will only know when McLaren officially releases the numbers and reveals the car.
The central driving position was part of the whole ethos of "no compromises" that brought about the technical advancements you cite. Putting the driver there wasn't to squeeze in an additional passenger, it was to put the driver in the best possible seating position to drive the car. Being positioned on the left or the right of a two seater isn't a problem for drivers but it is a compromise that requires asymmetry in your dimensional awareness. Not putting the driver in a central position makes me think they're not being as relentless with the original ethos of the McLaren F1, not being as creative (it's a "traditional" supercar arrangement) and causes me wonder what other compromises are being included in the design. It'll be a wonderful car, I'm sure, but, for those reasons, I cringe at the description of it being the next coming of the McLaren F1. All the best, Andrew.
This is mainly about the MP4-12C Spyder, but it also says that the F1 replacement will use a higher output version of the 3.8L tt of the MP4-12C. Maybe with KERS? http://www.autoblog.com/2012/05/14/mclaren-mp4-12c-spyder-coming-this-year/
