I am VERY HAPPY for Richard, he has built a great company producing and pushing great products through one of the best catalogs in the auto industry. It just felt like it was kind of an insider cool thing to have his products on my shelf and in my toolbox. That exclusivity provided me a little something extra for my money. I guess I can live with the loss of that certain feeling, I just hope that the increased sales volume does not hurt product quality.

But when I admitted to putting NAPA and Advanced Auto procured parts on the gt4 I was shuned! ;)

I hope this works out well for them, and does not hurt the brand that Richard did so well on building.

The sad thing is that they no longer carry "Bug Off", that is amazing stuff. I talked to them last week. Seems two things needed to make the product are not longer available. In fact the companies that made them are OUT Of Business.

If being available at my store down the street, while still being the same product, affects people's desire to buy it because the brand's cachet has been compromised... well, those people have bigger problems than the detailing products in their garage.

How do we know if it's the same quality product? Griot's products aren't cheap so I have a hard time imagining they the Speed Shine at Advance Auto Parts is the same Speed Shine you get from Griot's. Zymol is a great example.

I hope the profits are there. Those big parts companies usually want you to give it away for them to carry it. It just adds another company that needs to make it's cut and in the end you find yourself no farther ahead, and left with a diminished brand.

These are at the heart of my concern.

Zymol is the perfect example for this type of product.

Try it out, you would be able to see and feel a difference after you use Speed Shine or one of their waxes. Don't confuse retail price for cost...you don't think it really costs $10 for a bottle of soapy chemicals and water do you? Advanced Auto Parts will probably buy as much Speed Shine to stock their shelves in their hundreds of stores as Griot's sells now in a quarter. They will get a discount for buying in bulk which would allow them to sell it for probably the same price as you would pay online and better yet, no shipping cost and no waiting a week for UPS to deliver it.

There is a difference between being carried in a chain retail store versus selling your company to Turtle Wax.

Also, in case you hadn't noticed, Griots products had been available at various retailers already...even Tirerack.com.

I used to be a big fan of Griot's too... but no more. Some of the products were very good. Some were not so good.

Now, I'm hooked on www.detailersdomain.com. Between their Adam's line and Sonax, I haven't purchased from Griot's in a long time. I always wondered how much of my product cost went to the bi-daily printed catalogs I kept getting in the mail.
