    I feel like sports car and 4 seater don't really fit well together, but there are plenty of sporty 4 seaters out there for <60k. You have the American muscle for, e.g. Charger/Challenger SRT, GT500, etc. CTS-V is an amazing performer. The Germans have the awesome M3 and the S5. Japanese, I dunno... most of their cars that allow for extra passengers are meant for comfort and silence, not sport. IS-F is about all I can think of there.

    As usual, it all depends on your taste & personal circumstances.

    True, but side curtains didn't survive the '50s by much, IIRC.

    I think the real meaning behind the term "sports car" had more to do with the car being track-capable if the owner wanted, yet still road-able during the week. Think MG TC, Porsche Speedster, Austin Healey 100/4, Jag XK-120, etc. At some point, racing and road cars diverged. What we get now are mostly "sports tribute" cars -- tourers in sporting bodywork, too loaded down with luxury features to be taken seriously on a track without modification. Think Nissan 370Z, Ferrari 599, Porsche 997.

    Today marketers apply "sports" to everything short of a Lincoln Town Car/Cadillac Escalade Pickup, so you can have power windows, power seats, sat nav, an automatic gearbox, a/c, decorative wheels, seating for 4 or 5, cupholders, etc. and still call it a "sports-" car, activity vehicle, utility vehicle, whatever.

    FWIW, I think Ferrari applied the "GT" moniker to the 456 because they considered it a grand tourer.

    If 4 real seats are needed, this either this or the CTS-V were my first thoughts. The M5 would be used at $60k, the CTS could even be brand new I would think.

    I agree with you but can't bring myself to look at one for more than a glance. 600 hp almost mitigates that goofy look, almost.
    My vote goes to the Q porte or a 400i

    There are some fantastic 4 seat used buys under $80k, but under $60k, I would say new or used C63, M3, or an Audi RS4.

    Depends if you meant for hobbits to sit in the back seats or not?

    911 =hobbits
    928 =bigger hobbits
    Maserati Quattroporte = adult size
    Ferrari 456 =adult size
    Mondial = full size adults

    A Cabrio or Coupe is another consideration to think about?

    So the clear choice winner is ---> Mondial Cabrio 3.2 or t = Full size adults, how can you go wrong ?

    Agree with all of this... Just sold my evo x to buy a GTR... Would have loved to find one in the 50's, but you *do* need a budget of 70 for an actual decent one. Kids fit fine in the back, and an adult could maybe be jammed in for a short drive, but wouldn't be comfortable (more legroom but less headroom than my 911 had)

    Personally, I think the OP needs to define what *they* mean by sports car. *Technically* every car here is a GT and something like an Evo or STi is clearly a sedan, but if the OP means "quick with good handling" then a TON of cars come into play

    So OP... What are you actually asking? What usage did you have in mind? In other words, why the back seat variable? Just for argument sake, or did you have an actual use case in mind? What kind of maintenance budget? There is a purchase cap, but why no maintenance cap? Again, is this just some academic thing, or do you have a real scenario in mind? A $60k car that costs $1/mile to run and is going to be used as a daily driver probably wouldnt be a good choice unless its all academic. And finally, what do *you* define as "sports car" qualities? If performance, absolute performance, is high on the list (higher than, say, "soul" or whatever), then some of these cars go immediately.

    Without that its all pretty meaningless

    As an example... My buddy just bought a *new* '12 M3, made to order, for less than $60k *out the door* in VA. If this is in any way a real world discussion and actual practicality and running cost/usability matters *at all*, I don't see how you beat that unless you somehow don't consider the M3 a "sports car"

    I regularly see V10 M5s with ~40K miles on them for about $50-60K on autotrader.

    And you can have a manual transmission if you please. Otherwise, the paddles are quick but the car is said to be abrupt in auto mode.

    I usually classify sports cars as having two seats, but there are some good ones with four.

    M3 or 335
    M5-probably my choice
    Grandsport
    997 variants

    The E60 M5 model is great bang for the buck. They are mid 30s to very low 40s.

    Tough to get anything else with 500HP and a V10 that comes in a stick that is built as well as an M5.
