Ferrari F40 Values.

Hi everyone, I work for a British car show and could use the help of some Ferrari F40 enthusiasts. We're creating an F40 buyer's guide and are hoping to include the rise and falls of its value over the years since its launch. If anyone has any information on the value of this beautiful car since it's launch it would be really appreciated.

It doesn't fill me full of confidence that your buyers' guide is going to be any good when you start by posting about the F40 in the Vintage section and then apparently the only thing of interest about the car is its value.

Not knowing anything about the subject often doesn't seem to be a barrier to making a TV show about it. I assume the poster was referring to making a TV show and not some other kind to show.

 

Maybe move this where Joe Sackey can help the lad??

 

Trouble is, Joe Sackey could write a book about the F40 (and I hope he does) as he has already done so with certain other rare and desirable cars.

I doubt that your show will have much credibility if the people doing it aren't enthusiasts and experts.

OP, I think your first post raises a lot of doubts: Who are you, and what is the television programme you work for? Why would you decide to run a show on a car you know so little about?

I'm sorry if I am being rude, but something just doesn't add up here, sir.


PS Check back issues of Forza. Some say their valuations are highly questionable, but it will give you a place to start.

Have you contacted any specialist dealers? I'm thinking of companies like DK engineering or Bob Houghton. Both are very familiar with F40's.

Face it.... Nobody really wants to explain to you how to value an f40. If you really want one, then you will figure it out without the guide, and more likely by hanging out on this site for a while. This isn't your average used car, and it doesn't appear in the blue book.

 

I apologize I completely missed this thread.

The most significant characteristic of F40 values is the RANGE. The other factor is the difference between USA and ROW cars, although that gap is narrowing these days.

From a personal standpoint I focus on the USA cars and I'm finding it hard to source any USA cars under $500,000 that have not had their provenance compromised in some way, mileage & condition aside. Having said that, I could make a case for a mile-ey (@ 20,000 miles) car in driver condition bringing $400,000, but the reality is that no owner seems to need to sell or willing to entertain that number. In keeping with the aforementioned large range, on the upper end, I have a client who has 2 F40s and will privately consider selling his like-new well-preserved 500-mile car for $800,000.

My guess is that he has one he drives regularly and the low-mileage one for pure investment purchase. Nothing wrong with that.

We always hear on these boards the disparagement of owners who possess low mileage cars.

Fair enough.

But these comments are almost always made without knowing anything about the owner per se. How many cars he has, for example. How little time he has, for another.

At least he has one.

Or in this case, two....

 

I went to the Concours on Amelia Island not long ago. This is the one that had all the 250GTO's on display.....

Most of the 250GTO's were restored. A couple were original. Would there be a difference in sales price with these cars with regard to miles etc?

 

As old race cars, none of which mothballed at birth in hopes of future collectibility, guessing value hierarchy is achieved via race record/competition history.

Is there another example of 40+ year old cars that retain same value regardless of mileage?

Point being, I'm just always kinda blown away by how much mileage plays a role in these things.

 

The older vintage the car, the less it plays a role, and then condition & provenance are what count.
