everything is progressing nicely.... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Interesting: 1) The freeze plugs are press-in and not threaded in, and 2) The plug holes are cartridge fire, and not open...... Wonder what the thinking was ?
Hi, the rockers are being modified to run with roller bearings rather than the traditional bronze bushes, these is necessary because of the high lift cams we are using. 25 little rollers per rocker... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Roller cams are a very nice "internal" improvement, and the car will run better, longer and stronger. Keep with it !
Thanks! just hoping Mike's patience "keeps with it!" as he has 24x25 = 600 thread rollers to fit. cheers Mark
Hi, crank, pistons and rods are now fitted.... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Great to see your progress Mark. Clearly the engine is getting loving attention and thanks for sharing such detail with us. Fascinating.
Hi, Sorry made a mistake, these are the rods that were in the original engine, they were just being stored in the old arrow boxes. Sorry for the confusion. cheers mark Image Unavailable, Please Login
New flywheel??? Where do you get a new flywheel for this engine? Was it repaired to like new or you had a new one machined?
Just curious, was it done by a specialist Ferrari restoration shop? It seems like a bit of an arcane job.
Hi, slowly getting there....you can see in the first picture we have converted the head core plugs to the treaded version rather the the old pressed version....engine will be on the dyno soon. cheers Mark Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Wonderful, thank you. In the last photo there is the oil pressure relief end, what color and surfacing is correct? Silver / Gold anodized, paint or? Interested for my restoration, much appreciated.
Though this thread has roped me in several times, freshly took it all in not one, but two fell swoops anew . . . I needed a nap! The most unsettling comment of this epic experience you've shared has stayed with me since last April, and still sends shudders done my spine, even while knocking the wind out of me; Eek! I'm glad that horrifying proposition was settled. Beyond that unpleasantry is much that is pleasant . . . You have shown much, not just this on quest to restore automotive perfection, but hallmarks of character, integrity of the process and gentlemanly traits which are to be admired. All manner of things which are beneath the skin, "flawless" or not, and certainly not taken for granted, and for that, I applaud your Father, as he raised a fine Son. Enjoy the Festival of Speed with your '61 and your lovely Family.
The threaded plugs are a great idea ! The press-in plugs rarely fail, but when they do, it ain't pretty. Coolent gets into the engine oil, and the lubricity goes WAY down, which is NOT what you want on the Autobahn at redline in top gear ! A few minutes now, and peace of mind the rest of your life. Good on ya, mate !
nobody seems to be answering, so I'll step in and risk being shot down in flames. The end cap is brass, just clean it up and leave it as natural metal. btw, I would have thought that those zinc plated nuts on the front of the engine should in fact be black?
Hi Vizsla, Mike the engine builder got it made by one of the race teams he used to work for - a special favor! He tells me its stronger, lighter and perfectly balanced - absolutely delighted with it! cheers Mark
