Can someone clear up for me what is the standard roof lining on the 458 and whether it is worth the leather or alcantara option for an extra $1,000 (that is what it costs in the UK)?

No idea on the 458 but on my 2nd California I got a leather headliner. It adds to the leather smell and looks great. At first I was a bit distracted by its light color (interior is beige) but got used to it within a few miles. My first Cali had the black cloth whatever it is made of.

My dealer is very convincing in arguing the leather headliner on a Spider...I am concerned that Cuoio will be too light (and it is somewhat darker than your beige). Good to hear you got used to it...was thinking I might just go with black or charcoal on the headliner.

The standard headliner is a square of shiny grey fabric that doesn't really match anything in the interior. It's the same fabric Ferrari used for the standard headliner in the 360 and 430. The upgrade is a must do IMHO.

I agree the standard headliner is not attractive. When I spec'd my new 458 I looked at both and chose the black leather.

I agree. I got the standard on my car. It was one of the first things I upgraded on my new car.

It's not "ugly" and no one has ever commented on it but I think the standard should be better.

    For sure, I recommend upgrading.

That photo is amazing and somewhat of a disgrace for a $300,000+ car. Definitely upgrade, I think to Alcantara to match Daytona alcantara inserts and door panels. Thanks all.

I think this is one of those times that Ferrari intentionally designs things to force you to upgrade.

Paying spray paint the calipers shiny black instead of flat finish black is another.

Really? $1700 just to change the paint from flat to shiny?

Callipers are a joke. On the line, all they in effect do is reach to the left for the yellow box or right for the red. The additional cost to them will be zero, literally. However, to a degree that is understandable as you are customising and the black ones are fine. Imagine if Bentley or Aston fitted such a roof lining as standard.

    The list of extras grows.

We are getting off subject here but... $900 to have a white Tach dial instead of yellow? $800 to change your seat belt from black to red? $1100 for cruise control that is already built into the FI system? $900 for an ipod cable port?

It's stuff like this that is really infuriating when you're trying to spec the car.

I can understand things like Carbon fibre vs Aluminum or forged wheels instead of cast. But some of this stuff borders on insanity and seems incredibly petty.

IMHO, if you're doing alcantara inserts in the seats then consider that for the headliner. If interior is all leather then go with that. I have all leather, including the headliner and it's great.

Leather headliner is a very nice touch. I like the headliner the interior color, but that is a matter of preference.
Yeah, I was pissed that I paid extra for the yellow tach on my Cali and when I wanted the white tach in the 458, that was the only color they were charging extra for! Dang it! I pod cable is ridiculous. Many other manufacturers do it too albeit to a lesser degree.

To some extent, this is the same for every other car company. I once paid $2,500 for an LCD screen in a Nissan. The same type of thing is on eBay for $150, or installed from a stereo shop for $300.

I like the Alcantara option, especially for the 458.

I would do Alcantara Daytona strips, Alcantara A pillars and Alcantara roof.

    Boom... Bob's your uncle!

    LMAO!

But, anything, IMHO, is better than the standard grey.

My advise, order the car as if it is your last one! I did and for the first time, I did not regret doing so!

Have the standard headliner in mine and I actually don't really mind it. The shade and color actually matches well with the standard dash trim (which I have) and it breaks up the Nero leather cabin well. Have the race seats and chario STC2 stitching and overall would say there's sufficient contrast for a single color interior. Your car your choice in the end. Can't go wrong w a new 458. Have fun spec'ing

That's a very useful pic...good to see the upper interior color next to the roof panel. My initial order is Cuoio (grey stitching) with grey carpets and I had spec'd a Cuoio leather headliner, but I think I'm changing to grey alcantara to keep me contrast going up there.
