My wife has had 2 back surgeries for ruptured disks. The first in 1999 and the second in 2002. If she needs another one it will mean a fusion.

After her second surgery we bought a top of the line standard mattress. It lasted in the house for about 6 months. We bought another top of the line mattress, different brand. Lasted about 1 year and then it was "killing her".

In both cases, the mattress was fine at first, but seemed to "settle". In both cases the manufacturers had us measure the "settlement" and determined that it was "normal" and would not replace the units.

Got the Select Comfort on a friend's recommendation in early 2004. It has made a huge difference. For close to 3 years now my wife does not wake up in pain.

I have no connection with the company at all. I am just telling you our experience. We have had no issues at all with the mattress. We got the 4000 series.

jjc--two other comments. I have had no mold/sagging issues. We remodeled our master bath this spring, and moved up stairs (including the bed). I was able to inspect the bed--as we took it apart to move it upstairs.

Also, the SC beds sleep "hot". I don't really know why, but I seem to be warmer on them.

You can also take a look at the Bragada beds. very similiar to the tempur pedic but with a better price. I will probably get one of these for my next bed.

I've had a Tempur-pedic for several years. It is the best bed I've ever slept on. My doctor wrote a prescription so I saved paying the sales tax. Bought it at a national chain called "Relax the Back" and their service was top notch.

Go try the Sleep Number, Tempur and the Prana Sleep and decide which is best for you and buy it. Sleep is too valuable to skimp on in my opinion.

    Oh how right you are.

I'm amazed and someone that will spend $800,000 for a house they spend 16 hours a day in (maybe), with 8 of those hours sleeping (or in bed...), and yet they buy the cheapest bed they can find because they 'can't afford' a great bed...
Kinda like my wife, who puts off getting her eyes checked, and getting new eyeglasses, so she creates a lot of her own eye strain and headaches herself.
What's more important than your eyesight ?

I just wanted to thank everyone for their input. My sleep number bed finally arrived and I've been sleeping on it for 3 nights now. I definitely notice a difference when I wake up in the morning. My back seems less stiff, and as for now, my wife notices I do not toss and turn as much during the night. I hope this will last. I'll give a further update in about a month. :)

Saw an add the other day ago for a $50,000 bed. They are made in Sweden, I believe 9 a year by hand. No guarantees of good sleep, though.

    Tempur-Pedic FTW!!!

We bought the second least expensive model (maybe the classic or something?). Anyhow, it cost us about $1400, including the matress, the box spring, the frame, delivery, set-up, and removal of our old bed. Oh, we also got a cal king.

I love the bed - we've been sleeping on it for about 6 months now. I'll never sleep on anything else.

I got a sleep number for my wifes back pain and it has helped, but not completely gone. We think she needs a firmer setting than what the sleep number will provide. We have the 5000. I actually think that less padding for her would be better. As far as anything else about the bed I can't say anything bad.

After trying it for 30 days I still wasn't sure and they extended the trial period an extra 30 days. So far, seems like a stand up company.

I've slept on both the sleep number bed and the tempurpedic (sp?) beds on numerous overnights and I thought they were both just a gimmick. The sleep number bed is adjustable for firmness, but it seemed to me like I was sleeping in a shallow hole in the ground. ie the edge and center of the mattress was higher than the sleeping surface. It also felt like you had to work to stay in one place like sleeping on top of a beach ball. I know the previous two statement seem to contradict each other, but that's the best way I an describe the weird sensation of the sleep number bed. The tempurpedic was rock hard which some people like, but I can't stand it. I made the mistake of jumping onto the bed, not realizing it was a tempurpedic and I think I almost chipped a tooth from the whiplash. Once you lay on it for a minute, it molds to you, but I didn't like the sensation of being restrained from rolling around. I prefer a plain pillow top matress myself. My favorite mattress, (that I unfortunately haven't gotten to sleep on much in the recent past) is a pillowtop that I paid about 600 bucks for at Mathis Borthers. I forget the brand, but it was about the cheapest one they had. I was not opposed to the idea of spending good money on a mattress, but the cheap one was genuinely my favorite out of all the ones I tried. Best sleep I have ever gotten :)

Okay... 6 years later and the complaints with 1 star are at 71%.

I just came back from a visit to the Sleep Number Store and endured an aggressive sales pitch. Of course, they were expecting us to be impulse buyers on a $4000.00 bed. We said, We'll sleep on it"...

We were looking at the new M7 ("has 3-inches of CoolFit foam with gel technology for a cool, soothing sleeping surface") and the i8. Both cost the same, delivered.

However, after going through the reviews I'm now pretty leery of these things, especially with all of the headaches I've had with my appliances during the last three years.

The first bottom line? It'll cost ya almost $300 to try out their free 30 day trail period.

But now I'm bummed since I was hoping to get away from the 2-year lifespan pillow-top coil-spring beds.

Note too: Their "30 day trial" does NOT include the frame!!!!!! HARSH sales pitches
in the store - bait and switch - and on a big bed there's a big "hump" right in the
center - if you and your significant other ever plan to spend any time in the middle,
    well that's OUT.

    Almost bought into their hype....

Went with a Hampton Inn bed instead and have never looked back.

I have the California king, my parents gave it to my wife and I. I hate it. It is two smaller matresses and because we both prefer very firm settings, it slopes in the middle leaving a small ditch. I have had more problems since i started using this bed than ever before. I'm sure i am a small minority.

I use to have back trouble and toss and turn. Bought a sleep number and no longer back trouble and sleep soundly. I've had it for 4 years and it was the best investment I've ever made in the half of my life spent horizontal. I got the one that tilts and has built in massage absolutely love it!

You know there are companies out there who are honest and sell a good product but go out of business and then there are these yo-yos with all the lying that get to stay in business. WTF? I know two people who bought these things against my advice and ended up returning them. Returning them is EXPENSIVE.

    STAY AWAY! Read on... http://www.consumeraffairs.com/furniture/select.html

We have had our sleep number bed for 5yrs now and wouldn't trade it for anything. We love it. My wife recomended it to her parents and they bought one and love aswell. I guess it's personal preference.

I honestly don't know. I've never spoken w/ anyone that has had a bad experience. Maybe their setting isn't right.

What I do know is the expensive conventional mattress w/ a pillow top I had was simply too soft. After I purchased my bed, I no longer needed ambient, haven't experienced chronic back pain and sleep great. If one spends 7-8 hrs/ of every day laying down it seems a small investment even if it doesn't work to correct chronic problems.

This was the antithesis of my experience in our local store. There was no pressure, no bait and switch and we have no hump and we have a king. We went w/ a mild pillow top and the model that adjusts like a hospital bed. Perhaps the large pillow tops are not the way to go if you experienced humps??? just guessing.

If you take a look at this page:

    http://www.consumeraffairs.com/furniture/aaa_mattresses.html

you'll see that pretty much EVERY mattress has overwhelmingly poor reviews.

I'd guess it would be because happy customers are busy sleeping & only those who are unhappy take the time to let others know about it.

I have one, and there is no other mattress I am aware of that can adjust for two different people - it is a big plus.

    Is it worth $4k? Maybe.

I've spent the same amount on a Sterns & Foster that ended up being fine for my wife but too soft for me, so I ended up giving it to a neighbor after 3 months.

The problem, IMHO, with conventional mattresses is you can't flip them anymore, so no matter how much you spend over time they will sag in certain points, then you just throw the thing out.

I just hope I can buy the different foam pads form the company when they wear out.

The only downside I experienced (or plus to some) which I attribute to foam in general, is that the bed is warmer than a conventional bed (I think it traps you body heat).
