i've just discovered the fantastic world of r-gruppe porsches-I LOVE the idea of turning old (or 80's) cars into something that's a bit more personalized...anyone else feel the same way?

i have a hankering to turn an 88 carrera into something quite different-not a clone, but something that i've got stuck in my head...

it's nice to see a car not treated with kid gloves-i've been watching footage of guys driving their ferrari gto's in LA in the early 70's on youtube-they were just cars, to be had fun with

-in some ways, i think we've lost this-what with our obsession with the correct engine stickers, the original paint, the right door trim, etc etc...

Phil, I'm with you. During one 9 year period of my life I daily drove a '66 911 that was lowered, special Carrera Fuchs, Recaro seats, built out motor to 2.4, weber conversion, etc etc...I absolutely LOVED that car and probably the one that got away that I miss the most!

not really gruppe r complete, but some influence :D

jajajaja....I remember I had a car stereo shop 'cut the cord' and add a connection so I could run it through the lighter 'hole'....the in dash cassette was factory sized to fit right into the holes already in the teak dash, it was all so clean and beautiful! I also remember not wanting to cut into the rear deck to mount speakers so a set of visonik david boxes (small but potent) were carefully mounted in the rear, it was a concert hall with music, or webers....take your choice! That's chiffon white and the paint was amazing. The car was originally red and raced at one point, then completely restored and brought back to street car...I'm pretty sure I parted with something special :( and kinda realize it now. I sold it and an Austin Healey 100/4 to a Japanese collector when they were buying everything white in the early 90's! Anyone remember that?

a quick google search of gruppe r porsche's brings up a great set of photos to scroll through fyi

what idea have you got stuck in your head??

I just picked one of these up (short wheel base 1967) and am forming a plan for my R-Gruppe version. It was the proverbial barn find. I have been meaning to touch base with Jon (bullfighter) about his restoration shop choice about it.

Anyhow, here is before & the after look I will be going for.

Well, I sort of want to go slightly off piste, and make up my own fictional car...something that might have run in a Paris Dakar rally sort of thing....the car would be matte army green, with matte black drilled out bumpers (like the rally cars) cibies, buckets seats, roll cage, I'd loose a lot of weight (the car, not me)...that's what I have stuck in my head!

It's true, the singer Porsches are pretty amazing, but then for the price tag, they should be!

Jon is a constant figure here. He is knowledgeable on Porsche and is currently having an original Speedster completely restored by a fanatical group who specializes in things just like that. His opinion could be paramount to me on this project.

You know, that is sorta funny. I appreciate the Singer cars too (not nuts about them but I do appreciate them) but the photo I provided there that you reference is just a nice, correct, lowered, pretty, sitting on wide Fuch wheels factory 912.

THAT is how they look when assembled with factory parts. No Singer-ing needed. And that will be what mine looks like when done.

that's tres cool, i wouldn't have guessed it a 4 banger 911 ....it certainly does sit very nice indeed :)

i may not ever afford a real 2.7 RS ...but maybe one day build myself a clone, with a few personal fav mods :D

It’s not a new concept that the r-gruppe pioneered, they were just lucky enough to gather a number of like-minded individuals to” seize the moment.”
Some of us have been modifying and hot rodding 911’s since the days it was frowned upon as sacrilegious! Porsche has always hot-rodded them for racing so the concept has naturally carried over. Backdating is not recent concept either as in some cases it was/and is now, cheaper to back date a newer car than find and restore an earlier one!

I must say the wide Fuchs look awesome. I prefer the Singer-style, but your R-Gruppe concept looks killer.

    That would be a 912, not a 911... :)

What are those 'wide' wheels? - Deep 6's or... regular 15x6. Pretty sure you can't get 16's in there... or even 7" wheels... Michael B...? (Maybe you don't know, may not be YOUR car).

I can answer a question or two.

On the photo of the completed 912 sitting on Fuch wheels / those are 15x7. And in actuality a 16x7 will fit (with the correct tire) as I have a set of 6&7's on mine now for "body shop" wheels while it receives paint. Once painted I will be on factory 15x6 "flat 6" wheels - but may switch over to 15x7 for the look later - as even "deep 6" wheels wont give that particular look.

Once lowered to that point the confines within the wheel well are tight. But a slight massage of the wheel lip and/or aggressive camber settings will offer considerable gains.

I am getting there! Progress is taking place:
