so there I was....slabbing it from Canberra to Bowral... came across a ten car tailback... looked up ahead and noted 3 smokies, in convoy at an indicated 105 in a 110 so took a deep breath, set exactly 110 and went around the lot... middle smokie of the three steps out behind me as I crawl past and flashes his lights I give a friendly wave goodbye and move back into the left lane...and go about my business I think they were trainees as they all peeled off (get it!! at GLBN Ohhhhh the humanity!....I was made to feel like a criminal because I had the temerity to overtake a bunch of tossers at the highway legal limit... Rant over
That's the same model I still have in my garage, it loves a nice crisp morning, can't bear to part with it as it still makes me grin from ear to ear whenever the boost kicks in, very underrated car in my (biased!) opinion.
Owen....I had no idea. One of the best cars I've owned. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Ah no I made the wrong conclusion. Mines a poor mans 944 Turbo, l thought your claim of 4.2 seconds was pretty impressive! l can do 0-100 in the 944 in 5.5 but that's on a good foggy day and with the benefit of some mods admittedly. Still the best handling road car lve ever owned and very comfortable on a long trip.
I've had a few of them - great cars. Wes (Fazzerporscheman - what is that?) loves his. Here he is at Morgan Park. Image Unavailable, Please Login
"some mods" Standard car was 6.6 seconds, I doubt if a real-world driver could crack 7. btw good mate of mine had a 930 turbo and we set up a drag against my steel carby 308. I blew him away. Those cars only felt fast because the turbo lag was so extreme. Also hampered by 4 speed 'box. I thought the 3litre Carrera was a better drive and quicker A to B. I don't know how the factory achieved their 930 performance figures - perhaps they cheated? 933 was much better though and quicker than a 308.
You're bloody dreaming! My turbo was faster on any track I went to than any "normal"Ferrari until the 355. I put a 5 speed Ruf box in it, which made it infinitely better on the road.....no real difference in the track though.
I can answer this question real easy,Minogue at the same time owned the 1st 930 3.0l Turbo to come to Australia at the same time owned a GTB308 glass car,I shall ask him.
Spoke to Bob,he said he felt the GTB was quicker then the turbo over 1/4 the Porsche felt quick due to the turbo lag. On the track at Winton short the GTB was quicker but ran out of brakes quicker then the 930.
Interesting. Now I've no experience in either car but in NZ's classic racing scene 308 Ferraris got beaten by Datsun 240zs, Lotus Cortinas and hotted up Alfa Suds ... while 930 Turbos are setting lap records. In fact when I was involved in this scene the first 5 cars to finish most races were 911 Porsches of some type. When I stopped racing we even had some English built 308 Ferraris with apparently ~400hp ... used to get in the way of my Sud powered club car (200hp/512kg) ... the only things that were faster than my club car were Porsches. I suspect that some of the Ferrari drivers were girlie men, but I'd never put money on a standard 308 Ferrari being even close to a standard 930 Porsche at the end of a 5 lap race driven by "real" racing drivers. Pete ps: We did have one 930 Porsche that had over 550hp (http://racingray.wordpress.com/porsche-930/)
Take your point but it was properly measured 5.582 secs (avg) taken over 3 runs at Winton. Mods at that point included flow through exhaust, adjustable wastegate, authority chip, aftermarket intercooler, and (on that day) wider slicks on the rear (edit - and perspex rear screen which was a bad idea for the road) Agree with your comments on the "lag perception" and the mods on mine made that a lot worse when everything was turned up to "11". The big issue was wheel spin when the boost kicked in around 3.5K, but the trick was to keep the revs up from take off which destroyed the clutch in short order (not very practical even with a racing clutch fitted). Surprised a 930 would be slower than a 308 in a 0-100 dash, I was always under the impression they were a 5.0 - 5.5 sec car (depending on year). I suspect the 944T would be faster than my glass 308 in a 0-100k dash, even in "de-tuned" spec today, but that might say more about the condition of the 308! But the 308 will always sound and look a lot better doing it...
I suspect that's more about the owner/driver and the relative value of the car. A typical 308 owner is going to be older and more aware of not only the value of his car, but the cost of repairing it after a big lose or engine blow up. Young guys in $5K Datto's and Alfas can afford to be late braking heroes - you just go to the wreckers and buy another body shell for $500. Plus they get bragging rights for "beating a Ferrari". In historic open wheelers it's usually the young guys driving Daddy's Ralt Rt4 or similar, who make with the banzai manoeuvres and are usually picked out of the armco by the end of the meeting. They're back next time with the car repaired, no cost to them, so no change in behaviour.
Same problem in group SB/C when i raced the Carrera,D/heads in 10k Alfa's and MGB's crashing into you on opening laps trying to be heros after one lap one would be drawing away at about 5 seconds a lap,if you survived the start.
