proper F1 shifting - need advice

    I have had my 360 for almost 2 months and have gotten a lot more comfortable with the car but i still am not 100% sure how to treat the clutch and shift properly, especially to avoid excessive wear and strain on the clutch components

    1) Hard acceleration - i know the manual says not to lift during shifts but the shifts during WOT are very jarring - wouldnt lifting on the throttle during shifts be easier on the clutch? It is certainly smoother

    2) uphill in first - i often get chugging in first going uphill...should i just take off in second? this also seems hard on the clutch

    3) downshifting - run down thru the gears or just go to neutral and coast..seems if you dont come to a complete stop the car picks the wrong gear at times, and creeping along in neutral under 5 mph hard to get into first without complete stop

    1) Agree that it's jarring and even worse on sports mode but manual says do not lift off the pedal as well as the dealer; so I don't.
    2) I live on a hill so have this problem everyday. Shifting to second earlier seems to smooth it out. I normally shift ~3500-4000 when cruising but shift at 2000-2500 when going uphill at home.
    3) Let the car downshift as needed - I agree that it's in a higher gear then needed when I try to take off so then I downshift manually and go. Usually do not use first gear except to start off as it is not very smooth.

    I had my TCU upgraded to the 360CS one and whereas before I lifted off the gas (I've read multiple times it's better for the clutch) to avoid a bit of judder, now I keep my foot steady on the gas because if I lift off, the car judders - I think the 360TCU tightens up the slippage. Can't recommend it enough, especially for fast accelerating.

    If you can't go uphill in 1st, there might be a slippage issue? Definitely do not pull away in 2nd gear, especially on a hill!

    I run up and down the gears manually, feels great. I find the gears won't drop considerably until you've slowed right down so I just do it myself.

    I'm going through he same learning curve about 500 miles in. 2000 F1 Modena with original TCU.

    I don't lift even during hard acceleration. The throttle is electronic and the TCU/ECU lifts for you. It can be jarring but I tend to short shift into second to show a bit of mechanical sympathy. If you lift the electronics are expecting you to slow down then if you open it again it will have to dump the clutch or intervene to prevent an overrev.
    For normal driving using up to 5k, the shifts on my car are seamless.

    For hill starts try to be assertive on the throttle and try not to modulate it. Otherwise it modulates the clutch to compensate which is not a smooth getaway. 2nd is ok on small inclines and i don't worry too much about clutch wear.

    I select N approaching a red light or let the car downshift.

    I was a bit paranoid about clutch wear at first but TBH you just have to use it. It is the joy of F 1 ownership! I think normal shifts and take offs give minimal wear it is high rev launches and changes that take the life out of the clutch. The cars are built to take it.

    great stuff guys keep it coming, i guess im not alone here
    i agree i am a bit paranoid about premature clutch wear
    my first clutch was replaced at 13k miles..i bought it with 20k and about 82% remaining
    i want to enjoy the car to its fullest without a new clutch every 13 k miles

    Greyboxer is right on -- discussed in great detail at much length over many years around here. Virtually all clutch wear comes at starting from stopped so driver technique during that time is by far the major factor.     Many 360 F1 drivers have reported clutch life over 50K miles, some over 60K. Do it right and it lasts much longer than the internet weenies want you to believe.
