    I'm surprised by the relatively small amount he receives in sponsorship.
    Unless you count how much Santander contributes to his salary.

    Definitely. Can't believe Mayweather's take. Although he's a lot smarter than most guys in his profession because he does the promoting himself instead of letting Don King steal it. Gotta give him credit for that.

    I think the guys that make their living in the bloodsports should earn the most. Like Hemmingway said, ""There are but three true sports--bullfighting, mountain climbing, and motor-racing. The rest are merely games." I'd personally add boxing and MMA to that list. He was a huge boxing fan so I'm surprised he left that one out.

    :)

    He does seem to get a little discombobulated with his quoting strategy on occasion! ;)

    [Sorry D, had to comment!]

    Cheers,

    Ditto. My question is, since nobody ever divulges what the race winnings are, how much do you suppose his true salary is?

    I have no inside information or anything - Just my understanding of the way it works;

    - There isn't a "prize purse" at every race ala Nascar or Indy.
    - Money is paid at the end of the season, but for the *previous* seasons results. And you can lose this money if you change your team name.
    - You've gotta score points before you get paid dollar one - Unless Bernie decides you need a "helping hand". [I think this also applies to travel subsidies too BTW]
    - Some drivers contracts are heavily performance based, but that's between the team and the driver - Nothing to do with Bernie money.

    My (limited) understanding FWIW. Obviously open to corrections ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

    In the posts about the other drivers Schumi = 30M, Lewis = 28M, there was mention that Lewis's endorsements are controlled by Mclaren.

    Also I believe Santander brings the cash to Ferrari with the contractual obligation to pay Alonso his salary. So in a roundabout way it is an endorsement deal.

    The fact that many tiffosi do not like him doesn't help selling his t-shirts and caps....
