I have been told that when driving my 83 Mondial QV, it is best to change gears at about 6,000 RPMs. Sounds like a lot of wear and tear on the engine. Is this true?

That's crazy talk. The goal is not to bog your engine down with two little revs. Another words, don't fart around shifting at 2K or below all the time or these antiquated fuel injection systems will eventually cause a boat load of carbon build up on your heads. It's also good to open these cars up on occasion and drive them spiritedly to let them breath.

However, common sense should prevail and hitting 6K on every shift is just silly. I shifted my Mondial between 3-4K RPM under normal driving, and between 6K and redline when I was giving her real good workout.

I say we take the guy that told you that nonsense, put him on a "27" speed pedal road bike, and instruct him to not shift gears until his legs have reached maximum rpm in each gear !!!

Of course, we will bury him with full honors - - and Comedy Central will officiate. :):)

    Cheers, Hank

And piggy backing, is this person saying while driving in town you'll be screaming your car along at 5500 rpms in traffic. That's just silly. You can drive your Ferrari like any other car. I sometimes shift at a very low rpm and sometimes take it all the way to redline. The engine is tough and provides great torque for lounging around at low revs.

I don't know the full details of the conversation but it sounds like whoever told you this may be blowing smoke to put it nicely, in other words have no idea what they are talking about.

With over 20k miles in 3 years on my 87 Mondial I can say I have not found an adverse way to drive it. I drive it just like my other vehicles. Just don't abuse it.

In 3rd gear @ 5k-7k RPM, this car sounds amazing. It's like a Stradivarius violin but in car form.
