Guys, I'm a relatively new '88 TR owner, so please excuse the question. I took the car out today for a spirited 30 minuted ride today. When I got home I found that real end of the rear deck lid was hot to the touch as was the black trim piece immediately adjacent to the heat shield and the heat shield itself. I could expect that the heat shield could get pretty hot but was not expecting the lip of the deck lid to be quit so hot. Opening the engine compartment I noticed no weird smells, and all my temp gauges were completely nominal during the drive. The cats looked normal. This may be nominal but I had not noticed this before. Maybe this is just a newbie concern. TIA for any thoughts. :harry
Sounds normal to me. I usually open the engine hatch when ever I stop to let the heat out and not put undo stress on the paint. Oh and to stare at that awesome engine....such artwork
Sounds normal to me as well. A lot of heat generated (especially with cats) and while the screens/louvers do a decent job of extracting it does still build up, especially with a lot of low speed/idling. If your temps look good and your fans are cutting in/out when they should you should be fine. 104 degrees on Fathers Day here and took mine out with no heat issues (ran a/c too). If you find your fans are intermittent that's likely connections at the fuse panel or (less likely) sensors. Many threads covering this. Congratulations on your new TR.
Yes, it is surprisingly hot to touch which you can attest to. Also, you can put Hyperflows cats or some variation thereof - and reduce the heat tremendously.
