Hello FChatters. This photo is from the 1963 1000 KM of Nurburgring and it shows 2 GTOs (probably in Carousel turn, not sure) which one of them is flipped. Does somebody know the luck of the flipped car or where is it now..?

    Thanks in advance

Very cool picture, I find it ironic how the flipped car has the 'flipped' numbers of the upright GTO.

Yes, that the famous Carousel-section on the old `Ring!
Why did he flipped? To get that section correct you need to go very early into the banking very precisely. I assume he fast too fast and missed the point to go down.
The baking has two different angles and the steeper, lower angle of the road is the faster version to drive through this section.

3647GT, car number 14, was also flipped on the 24th of August, 1963 by Tommy Hitchcock at the Goodwood Tourist Trophy. Graham Hill, in a GTO, won the race with Mike Parkes 2nd, also in a GTO and Roy Salvadori 3rd in an E Type. There are 5 250 GTOs in the race, one of which is the 250 GTO LMB driven by Roger Penske. The Drogo bodied 250 SWB (ex Stirling Moss 2735GT) driven by Chris Kerrison, who stopped to help Hitchcock, is also in the race. See the fabulous video in the link below. No sound.

Full details of the cars, pictures, drivers, qualifying and results in the link below.

3647GT had a hard early life as it was also crashed by John Surtees in the 1962 Goodwood Tourist Trophy whilst leading the race in a collision with Jim Clark, who had spun, when he was lapping him.

There is a lot of history here. I didn't know that 3647GT involved in an accident. I also like the Drogo bodied 250 SWB. I think that I saw a Drogo bodied GTO SWB in DKs Engineering site as one of many cars they restored over the years. Is this the specific car or another Drogo?

Very interesting links Mr Robertson. As i said, there is a lot of history....
    Really thanks for sharing.

You're welcome, Greg. Yes, the Drogo body is fabulous isn't it. That particular car, the very famous ex Rob Walker 2735GT 250 SWB Competizione driven by Stirling Moss, was rebodied again by Grand Prix Metalcraft with an original shape 250 SWB type body and the Drogo body put on a 250 GTE. Details in the link below.

    http://www.barchetta.cc/english/all.ferraris/detail/2735gt.250gt.htm

Details below copied from Supercars dot net. Links from that site don't work on this one.

"2735GT-Painted Dark Blue with a distinctive white front band, 2735GT was delivered new to Rob Walker and heavily campaigned in the UK by Stirling Moss. In this car he embarrassed the best British efforts from Aston Martin and Jaguar. Moss failed to finish at Le Mans, but took first overall at events like the the British Empire Trophy at Silverstone, Peco Trophy at Brands Hatch and Tourist Trophy at Goodwood. After Campaigning extensively in Britain, the car was rebodied by Carrozzeria Drogo for Chris Kerrison. This remained on the car until 1980 when a replica body by Grand Prix Metalcraft was fitted. The Drogo body was later fitted on 250 GTE 2+2 3611GT.

Long time owner Clive Beecham raced the car with the replica body with the '1SWB' UK registration. IN 2007 he sent it to Ferrari Classiche in Maranello for a full restoration. The 20-month job included casting a new competition spec 250 engine since the original was long gone. Further modifications were done to the replica body to get the exact details and dimensions correct to delivery specifications as it was in 1961. Stirling Moss was reunited with the car and it later appeared during the parade laps at the 2009 Goodwood Revival."

And some further information on the Drogo body that came off 2735GT.

WOW... Now I can see why the prices of these cars are always in a high level. What is the basic price to start with for a Drogo bodied SWB GTO..? Just for knowledge...
The archive is just amazing. Actually both links.

I've no idea of the value of the Drogo bodied cars or how many were made. There is of course the famous Breadvan built on SWB c/n 2819T. The Drogo body that was on the ex Rob Walker/Stirling Moss 2735GT can be seen in the link below from about 0.40 on.
