Sherlock Holmes: Picturesque mess, saved only by Robert Downey's charm and imaginative 19th century gadgetry.

Snow White and the Huntsman: Very good allround & much better than I expected, great adult retell of an old kids' story.

Brave. Somewhat overhyped and not as good as the positive reviews I read. Not a bad movie, and in fact pretty good if an adult can watch it and enjoy the (predictable) plot. There are some intense scenes for little ones, the bears are scary and not in a cute Disney sort of way, one wouldn't look out of place in a horror movie.

I feel that way about a lot of Pixar movies. Up and Wall-e come to mind. Not bad movies -- just not up to the hype.

All of their characters always look exactly the same. They need some fresh blood.

I never expect anything from Pixar (thinking those are for kids) and so occasionally I'm postively surprised. Up was cool. But something like the Lorax or Brave I wouldn't even bother with.

I have my own early warning system: When the buses in the city drive around with big ads for a particular movie, you know it is bad. The studio realized that they have a stinker on hand and now do anything they can to promote it.

Since there was so much talk about Prometheus and Alien I thought it was fitting to take a couple shots of two models I built a while ago.

The astronomer was a kit, which still can be found (for lots of $) on ebay. 20 years ago I bought it for like 20 bucks.

The spaceship was a SUPER rare find on ebay. Some guy in Australia sold this as a resin kit (which means he probably has more to sell). The details are so fine and accurate that I'm sure he must have had access to the model used in the film. Probably did a mold or computer scan off it.

I have these two models (both of course designed by H.R. Giger) sitting next to each other.

PS: Sorry for the hijack. Maybe we should start a movie memorabilia thread?

Bully (About the Bobby Kent Murder in FL). More than Violence, this movie shows how dumb humans can be (In group or by themselves).

    Great movie.

I saw Bully a couple of weeks ago Andrew. Thought it was ok. Was actually looking for the 2012 movie of the same name. Ooops. Read up on this case on Wikipedia afterwards...wow.

Thinking of going to see Looking For A Friend For The End Of The World movie or whatever it's called. Steve Carell, and that babe from Bend It Like Beckham, Keira Knightley. Should be nice, but I have to muster up the courage to sacrifice two hours of my time. Netflix is so much easier--catch up on emails and enjoy a meal or snack, and if it's bad, it's off.

Along the theme of dark movies, anyone seen Sleepers? I don't know, I might have mentioned it earlier on this thread--apologies in advance if I did. Always have loved, loved that movie. Really nice plot, acting, sets, everything. Can't believe child actors can be so sophisticated and subtle. Loved it.

    And there's always Princess Bride.

    Fezzick, tear his arms off.

Sleepers is amazing. Very sad and very powerful. I saw it back when it came out and didnt really care for it (I was 16) but i watched it again last year and i was speechless. Every actor did a great job.

Havent seen the 2012 movie (Documentary?). But the 2001 movie and the story it is based on are..for the lack of a better word "disgusting". At several moment i wanted to stop the movie because i just couldnt believe how dumb all of these kids were. And when the movie ended and they show each one with their sentence, my wife and i realized it was a true story and it "made" the movie. It's on Netflix and the description is very poor (which is often true on Netflix).

Moonrise Kingdom. A cast to kill for in a ho hum, artsy effort. Tons left on the table. The director is reportedly a fiend for details. Yeeeah. The movie is set in 1965, the police car is a '68. Eeesh.
Style over substance here. Not funny, not anything actually but big scores with critics. 3/10 tops.

There was never a Derelict Ship built at that scale.

I worked on the restoration of the original model back in the early 90s and it was huge...probably 5 feet long.

    The hurt locker.

Awesome. That sniper scene was fantastic, one of the best I've seen. I watched all 3 of the (terrible) Sniper movies; in the 15 minutes or so it was in the Hurt locker it beat them so far into the ground we can use it as oil pretty soon. And this film is about disabling bombs!

Just think about how implausible it was that two bad guys from 1000 yards away could pick off our guys (or the Ralph Feinnes mercenary character) with an AK-47. No effing way.

A friend of mine has a son that actually was a Marine sniper and did two tours in Iraq. He just laughed at that scene.
