This is a follow-up to my previous post on how to get a 458. As everyone said - you have to play the game. This is the game of "what have you bought from us lately and how much did we make off you".

Here is my deal - please chime in and let me know how bad this is:

I have to buy a used 458 from them. This is one of the top contenders. I think this car had a sticker of like $290k and I would have to pay $315k it has 583 miles.

    http://www.boardwalkferrari.com/certified/Ferrari/2011-Ferrari-458+Italia-Dallas-a31b54b00a0a006501f60f2b5ad317d9.htm

I looked at trading my 2008 Scuderia but since they didnt care if I sold it outright and they saw me vomit on the floor with the trade offer it would be sold separately. I buy the 458 and they order me a spider which will arrive in around 12-14 months. Spider is purchased at sticker. They want first right of refusal to take the 458 back on trade. They estimated the trade value to be $260k in 12-14 months.

Anyone want to comment on how good or bad this deal sounds? I hate playing this game but also want a Spider...

Offer them sticker price. Then when the spider arrives turn over the Italia on consignment.
They are being a little greedy at 25k over msrp.
After 15 mo with my Italia I did just that and my spider arrived 10days ago.Just in time for beautiful weather here in Oregon.

Good tip. Question - can I do this at any Ferrari dealer or do I have to choose the one in my area? I think I read a post which said you have to order your ferrari (new) from the dealer in your area. In other words - if they say no to my offer do I have any other alternative?

There is also the new McLaren which comes with none of the ordering drama of a 458. I agree its not quite a 458 but its darn close. Drove one a couple of weeks ago...

Interesting idea. I'm going to check how long it would take to get one...if it could arrive soon, then I could drive that while waiting for a 458 spider slot...I won't get into the whole fan-boy crap about which car is better. The Macca is clearly a cool and capable car and would be a unique ride for a while...and that strategy let's one own/drive both spiders...good idea. I'm calling them today...

Word on the street is first cars arrive in November. Get on the list now and its a year away so almost the same as buying a 458 and getting on the spider list.

    Hi All,

I would keep the Scud and be very satisfied. Good luck on your choice and I salute you for having the dough to sit at the table and play the game.

Not sure what dealers you guys are offering your business to (and i say that on purpose because you are the customer and you can go to any number of dealers and brands). But i didn't have to buy a used car, a lesser model or anything else from my dealer when i ordered my car. I paid MSRP like most people (I don't think they are being discounted much or at all) and got the car I wanted. I'd say if your dealer is forcing your hand, call any number of dealerships that would be happy to get you the car you want. If you'd like I can put you in touch with someone that can order you the car you want.

    I have one comment here.

If you don't think the dealer is reading this, you're crazy.

I've never been in a negotiation where I let the seller hear my private conversations and thoughts....

I certainly would not be pushed into paying overs on a used Italia so you can be honoured by the dealer in allowing you to purchase another car from them. Stuff them. If you want a Spider that badly wait 12 months and pay overs on a used spider. This way you are losing both ways. What are you gaining, are you getting bumped up the list? It seems to me you are taking a hit on the purchase and then another on resale, and then giving them profit on the Spider! In the UK Aithorised dealers are not allowed to sell cars they purchase at over list, they can offer customer cars on a sale or return basis. This is costing you 55K if they stick to their trade in valuation.

If you already own a Ferrari (Scud) where did you get it, because, given the way "things work" you already paid your dues to get a car at MSRP. Contrary to popular belief Ferrari's are not selling so fast that anyone can garner over sticker anywhere in the U.S. unless someone with enough money not to care and a dealer who takes advantage happen to meet. Do not pay over MSRP under any circumstances. If the dealer wants to stay in business he will do the deal. Best

That's what I'd do. With 625HP it's probably faster too.

I'm not sure you'd get one any faster though. I'm sure they are 6 months away from production start and then there's the same waiting list, which they have been building for some time and will even more with today's press release.

    But, it's worth a try.

Mac dealers have also been playing "games" with coupes and spiders. Those who own coupes and want to trade them in will get theirs faster too. It's only natural. Just like Ferrari, they will limit spider sales because they don't want a glut of coupes coming into the used car market.

There is a limited market for these kinds of cars. Even a difference of a few hundred cars could make a big difference in resale value.

I think I fully understand now why Jay Leno doesn't own a Ferrari.

I am completely dumbfounded by the actions of (normally) very astute and (obviously) wealthy businessmen who continue to put up with nonsense like this. It almost sounds as if some of you think Ferrari is doing you a favor by bestowing upon you the "privilege" of purchasing one of their cars.

Would you guys put up with these types of shenanigans in your normal business dealings? I don't think you would.

I might understand if Ferrari was the only game in town, but they're not. If enough of you guys get together and tell your local dealers to shove it, I think they would start singing a different tune really quickly.

Ferrari needs you and your hard earned money, not the other way around. Make them chase after you. There is no need for "games". That's just ridiculous.

Unless of course you guys like being abused and taken advantage of then that's a different story altogether. :D

    Baloney.

Absolutely baloney. Do you know Jay Leno? Well, I can tell you that's not why he doesn't own one.

Second, McLaren is playing the same game right now... buy a 12c Coupe and get priority on the spider. So, the other guy in town is playing the same game. Oops.

Third, I didn't play any game but I'm getting a car. How did I do that? I bought cars that I really wanted and traded them in to get the latest and newest. Since when is buying something you want "a game"?

The only people who claim it's a game are the ones who want to jump the queue from those of us who have been loyal customers.

Want to get a car early? Stop whining and buy some cars.
