Bad luck there for Alonso. It looked like he had it saved but once he hit that concrete it shot him a completely different direction.

He was certainly pleased when he hopped out of his car. lol

I caught only the last ~ 7 mins of FP2; how bad was Senna's wreck?

Pretty nasty. He hit the wall going pretty quickly. Both the front and rear of the car suffered pretty heavy damage.

So Hembery is saying, and I gotta agree with him, that they wouldn't have done much, if any, more running even had they been allowed replacement full wets. For unknown reasons, they can get another set of inters for Saturday, but not the Wets.....

    Anyway, the final part of the interview really caught my eye;

I've already noted my surprise that any unused sets get scrapped after the weekend - But each day!? Assuming it's still raining tomorrow I guess another couple of hundred get binned as well...... Ditto on Sunday?

I don't understand! Surely, their shelf life can't be *that* short can it?

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Shhh........ Don't tell anyone! ;)

Seriously, anyone have any idea why the shelf life appears so short? We know Pirelli are paranoid about keeping them all identical, but this seems like overkill to me.

IIRC, it was Jim Clark who once noted that sometimes he ran his F1 car on the old tires that had finished the previous race! They were green and didn't know it! :)

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Way to hijack! ;)

I actually just finished watching it. Hopefully he won't bottle it against Rog.

Possibly due to mounting considerations? I thought I read somewhere that the tire beads are secured to the rim with adhesive when they're mounted. Each team may only have a few hundred wheels, so to "return" the unused Friday tires means dismounting them, which may destroy the tires.

I had also read that Jim Clark did go half a season on a single set of brake pads, while Graham Hill would use one or two sets of brakes per race weekend.

Read something similar re Lauda/Watson at Brabham-after a GP Lauda's car still had good pads n clutch as opposed to Watson's which were completely worn out.

    +1

John was well known for *destroying* dog rings too. Apparently he never used the clutch.....

I could tell which jockeys gearbox I was working on by the state of the dogs...... Some guys just 'felt' it better than others it seems.

    Cheers,
    Ian
