    $235....that was a nice car.

What is the spread $$ between a 09 Scud and a 09 16M....real world numbers?

This thread got me thinking about a 16M

    (absolutely adore my Scud.)

I struggle with understanding why the 16M exists. The 360CS was a performance/track version of the 360, raw and more visceral. The Scud is is the performance/track version of the F430. Spiders are softer more touring versions of the equivalent Ferrari models. I owned both the regular F430 Coupe and Spider and enjoyed their distinct different value propositions. The 16M is a compromised version of the Scud by virtue of its higher weight and Spider based chassis. Other than the lower volume production which may make this a better collector car, what does this car offer that is really more purist Ferrari than a Scud and a regular F430 Spider?

It's a Scud without the roof - what more reason for it's existence do you need! All the drama and excitement of the Scud turned up to 11. Drive one, you will soon understand.

I think the better question is what is the 16M really worth today? There is a large delta when you see 1000 mile cars priced at $300K but 7000 mile cars are actually selling (as opposed to being offered for sale) at $235K. $1000 a mile makes no sense. I have seen other nice 16M's that I like and would consider, but not at the price difference to that black one. It was listed for a good amount of time at $250 and then dropped to $240 and was still for sale for awhile at $240 before selling at $235.

Is pretty much same as why some people prefer a Scud over a F430. If you want a raw topless, you have to go for the 16m!

I think for desirability due to the low numbers the 16M will always demand a premium.

Thanks...that is what I have noticed as well. The 16Ms that are for sale are offered for roughly $75k over the equivalent Scud. I can justify $30-40k for the switch but not much more. I bet that I am not alone in this analysis....

I can't comment on driving experience but I will comment on why they built it.
Ferrari won their 16th constructors championship in F1. What better way to celebrate/brag about this than make a special edition car? This allows them to make a significant price increase and broadcast to everyone that they are the best. Had they not made a reference to F1 and called it the Scuderia spider instead, then a large price mark up would not have been justified.
That's my idea about why they made it: money and bragging. Enzo would be proud

Perhaps you should drive one, understanding why the 16M was built will only become clear once you have driven it.

    Wish I could!!!
I understand why it was built beyond the money reasons.
It's a lightweight, drop top, purpose built super car with a screaming v8 behind your head with a great exhaust and good handling!! It doesn't get much better than that.
Just riding in one would be an experience.

Having just bought my 16M, I did a lot of research and gave a lot of consideration to the potential effect of a 16M version of the 458. A couple of observations:

    - Today, the variability in pricing on the 16M seems directly related to the mileage. Some people bought them new and drove the snot out of them. I've seen a number of 16Ms with 7-8K miles on them. As you might guess, these cars are at the lower-end of the price range.

The asking price for cars with under 1000 miles on the clock are still close to $300K.

    - Remember, they only built 499 16Ms... this is 100 fewer models than the GTO. There will be many more 458's and 458 spiders built than 16Ms. So if you're looking for something special that will remain unique (not that Ferraris in general aren't unique), the 16M is pretty cool. Ferrari hasn't said anything about a "scud" version of the 458, but you have to assume one is coming and with it, likely a spider version.

Had Ferrari made a spider version of the CS, we'd have a better benchmark for what will happen to the 16M overtime.

As for me, I'm not worried about it. My car had 563 miles on the clock when I bought it 3 weeks ago and I've already put 200 miles on it and I was overseas for 2 of those three weeks.

For anyone who's ridden in or driving the 16M, you know it's an incredibly special car. I'm still getting used to the super low clearance (scraped the front AND the back on normal roads in the first week) and the ride is more aggressive than my F430.

I'll get the car wrapped by Premier in a week or so and can't wait to get this car on the track. That will be fun.

Great write up! I contemplated on getting the 16M rather than the Scuderia coupe, but ended up with the coupe. I have a feeling the 16m might be a car to buy in the future. Enjoy you car, and where are the pics?:)

Aren't they beautiful! What a car! I love mine, and could not think of any other car to own at this moment. The 16M is a beautiful car, but had an issue with the price delta between the scud and the 16M. Maybe in the future for me, but for now I am extremely happy.

More and more I think about it at the CURRENT market, the price delta is really high for a vert and low # production being the main differences.
I love my 430 Spider, but wonder if it is more sensible to get a Scud and with the delta buy a fun toy drop top or get another Lotus.

25 out of the 499 ended up in Hong Kong - a lot of cars for a city of 7mn. Value in HK has tanked big time with no end in sight. Many cars for sale. No buyers. Everyone who wanted one got one new.

The price people pay for these cars is very subjective, and depends on many factors. For me, I could definitely justify the price delta in the future 5+ yrs (maybe less;-)) At this point, I could not. I have different goals and priorities in my life.

$229k does seem like a decent price and looks like they're dropping a bit.

Using the above delta, you could say that for any ferrari, why not buy a Nissan or porsche and save 100k? It's a never ending game when looking at cars, especially Ferrari.

While the 50k delta from a scud to a 16m might be a bit much for some potential buyers (which is understandable) I still say when I'm roosting like this with top down, I always seem to forget about the price delta.
