It's my first F1 event (can't wait) and I thought 90-120 days out would be enough planning time , man was I wrong! We'll probably end up paying 700 to 1k/night to rent someone's home (still searching), but wow....200 hotels at let's say 300 rooms per hotel =60,000 rooms....seen numbers of 300k to 400k visitors to Austin area.....crazy!

Still a couple of northwest Austin hotels available on the CoTA site for under $300. If you can get somewhere near the arboretum area, it's a good part of Austin to be in. About a 10-15 min drive to downtown, which will be the best place to get the shuttle I think. I think that's the best deal right now unless you can find something closer to DT.

You also may try calling the hotel San Jose - they supposedly don't book any earlier than 90 days out. But it is a really trendy boutique hotel on South Congress (awesome location near downtown) that will probably sell out in minutes when they release the rooms. There may be others that don't book farther out than 90 days, so perhaps making some other calls to boutique hotels would be worth it.

If you stay in San Antonio, there is lots to do there as well.. Probably about a 1 hr 30 min drive to one of the shuttle stops with normal traffic, but I'm somewhat worried about traffic on I 35 coming up from SA -- there may be quite a bit of traffic from Mexico on that route which is quite busy normally.

I don't know if there will be a special shuttle from SA to Austin, but there is megabus.

Didn't think of that (either). I'd be coming from New Orleans and my original thought was to get a hotel east of the track like Glidden or somewhere along 71 but reasonably close.

However, I suspect Glidden is too far east if I still have to get into Austin for the shuttle.

Plus your comment about traffic from Mexico reminds me that there will probably be a lot of traffic coming from the Houston area too.

At this point I'm not even sure if I can go pending work. Ugh.

Let's hope I win the Powerball b/w now and then and this will get a lot easier! :D

I decided I'm not going to go to ANY of the Austin races. The track, people, atmosphere just doesn't interest me. There's no way I'm paying $3k+ for a weekend in Texas, I'd rather blow the $3k flying to Canada and having a beer with Tifosi12 so I can finally figure out why Romulans and Klingons don't get along.

Jersey is going to be good though.

2 G.A. tickets, gasoline for the drive from Atl and back and meals. Staying with friends who live in Austin. Just to be at the premier is thrill enough. If it turns out good, then maybe buy a PSL, but too many unkowns to do it up front. This will be a cheap "exploritory" outing.
In any case it will be fun! You really don't have to spend gobs of money to enjoy the sport.

Are they going to offer helicopter service to just get to the track? I hear that road isn't nearly big enough yet to handle the mess that's going to be there.

Austin is a waste of time and money. They are already charging excessive hotel rates, Its going to be unorganized too. Save your money and go to Montreal next year. Once you go to Canada the USGP will look like amateur hour.
NJ could be a blast though.

I was just in Austin this weekend and went by the track. I looks like its going to be a really nice track but I think its going to be a real mess if they dont get busy getting the city ready for the influx. Glad I have friends to stay with for the race.

+10000 and think about, you're being charged through the nose to go to Texas of all places. Not Montreal, NYC, Las Vegas, Paris, Copenhagen, no......Texas. I like Texas, but once I heard what they wanted for a hotel room I decided there was nothing in heaven or Earth that would convince me to pay that amount for a hotel room in Texas unless God himself were there allowing early admittance to heaven. So in other words, it's not really close to the top of my list for favorite vacation places. I'd gladly fork it out for any other venue though. Weird, cause I'm conservative too......

I'll be happy to explain the Klingon thingy to you over a beer in Manhatten in June 2013.

Not that I'm a Trekkie, but knowing little about a particular topic never stopped me from posting endlessly about F1. :)

However I disagree with the notion of never going to the Austin GP: Agreed that the first edition will be chaotic in parts and we know that the hotel situation sucks. But both of these problems will go away in a few years (assuming the GP survives so long). Then it should be fine.

Also personally I find it more interesting to go to various different GPs than revisiting the same one ever year. Montreal is a jewel, but I'd still rather go to see an average GP I haven't been to. Different strokes for different blokes.

In all fairness any GP trip outside of the US will cost significantly more money than going to Austin or NY. If Austin gets its hotel situation under control, the two alternatives will probably come out even financially.

Montreal is great fun, but it doesn't come for free either.

+2 on skipping Austin for the first year. I went to Montreal instead. I will consider going to Austin next year once the initial wrinkles are worked out.

You guys are looking in the wrong place. I'm sure you could find a nice entrepreneurial young lady on backpage.com who is willing to let you spend the night at her place for less than the cost of a hotel room. Room service included... ;)

why bother looking for a hotel when you could rent a killer motorhome and park for free at one of the fchatters ranches.
it's just a few minutes from the heli shuttle too.
