    The year after Schumi retired, someone asked the question . . . if you had to pick one driver to set the best lap time and your life depended on it, which driver would you pick.

    At the time, even though retired, I picked Schuey.

    Today, my pick is easy:

    Fernando Alonzo.

    Who's yours?

    Just one lap? And with this season's cars?

    Kimi, because he's scored the fastest or top 5 fastest lap in the last 5 of 8 races so far.

    As I understand, one driver (of any era?), in perfect conditions on any track. One single lap.

    I would say Kimi in his prime, spa francorchamps. Unbeatable in perfect conditions in a perfect car imo.

    Senna in his 1988/9MacLaren, or schum in the 2002 Ferrari. Alonso would be awesome except our car isn't quick enough, for a one lap life or death run!

    Jim Clark.

    72 starts.
    33 poles.
    28 fastest laps.
    25 wins.

    JYS; "He was so smooth, he was so clean, he drove with such finesse. He never bullied a racing car, he sort of caressed it into doing the things he wanted it to do."

    No one has mentioned Alain Prost. He was so smooth I could not fathom how he could set fastest lap, lap after lap.

    Yet he was not the only driver to have ever done this, gotta admit he was a smooth operator. Are you referring to the '91 GP of San Marino where he was soon followed by my dawg Gerhard?

    Current F1 driver: Vettel, then Hamilton.

    Any era F1 driver: Clark, then Senna.

    If I can choose a driver from any era, that's an easy one - Senna in his McLaren Honda.

    If you are talking today's drivers, I would have to go with Alonso.

    Outside of Jimmy, who remains my choice, Ayrton would be a solid second.

    However, just looking at the "relevant" #'s tells us;

    Jimmy;
    72 starts
    33 poles = 46% [Think about that for a moment! - He put the thing on pole nearly half the time.... Stunning!]

    Ayrton;
    161 starts
    65 poles = 40% [Certainly about the best outside of Jimmy!]

    By way of comparison;

    The Schu;
    296 starts
    68 poles = 23%

    Jimmy was quite simply able to persuade even a recalcitrant car to the front. Nobody like him before or since IMO.

    Having said that, another good excuse to repost Ayrton's Suzuka pole lap from '89 - No "subtlety" or "finesse" here! Scruff of the neck and go for it! Doesn't matter how many times I watch it, still gives me goosebumps......

    Agree on the any era. Not on the current guys; Unfortunately, I doubt we'll ever know but I believe Fred is ultimately a little quicker than both Seb & McHam these days.

    Anybody ever heard of Jackie Stewart?
    Stewart, Clark, Moss from the old days.
    Senna, Schumacher, Prost from last 25 years.
    Current grid? Fernando by a mile
