If you hadn't noticed, Scott Sharp's Extreme Speed Motorsports scored their first-ever ALMS GT-class win today at Mosport, which means Ferrari's first class win this year.

It came at the expense of the Flying Lizard Porsche, which was first across the line, but was disqualified for failing a post-race "stall test". So, what the heck is a "stall test"?

BOWMANVILLE, ONTARIO, CANADA July 22, 2012 The old adage of being at the right place at the right time held true today for the Tequila Patrón-sponsored Extreme Speed Motorsports (ESM) at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park with the team finishing second, but awarded the victory after post-race inspection.

The ESM teams No. 01 Ferrari was listed as the second-place finisher in the GT class at the checkered flag, following Johannes van Overbeeks move of the race to pass Jan Magnussen on the final lap.

However, the first-place Flying Lizard Porsche was excluded from results for a technical infraction following a post-race inspection. As a result, the Extreme Speed Motorsports Tequila Patrón Ferrari was awarded the victory.

This is the first win for Extreme Speed Motorsports in its three-year history competing in the American Le Mans Series. Todays win marks the second podium for ESM of the 2012 season. In April, Scott Sharp and van Overbeek finished third at the Grand Prix of Long Beach.

The No. 01 team ran an impressive race. Sharp battled his way from the fourth position on the grid to reach as high as second before turning the Ferrari over to van Overbeek, who was making his 100th ALMS race start this weekend.

The excitement escalated during van Overbeeks stint in the Ferrari. As his stint progressed, van Overbeek noticed the strength of the Ferrari on the long runs. As he passed GT competitors one-by-one van Overbeek found his way back into the third position.

While running third and gaining on the Corvette of Jan Magnussen, van Overbeek bid his time, confident he could catch Magnussen. Then on the final lap he made his Hail Mary pass and maneuvered the Ferrari inside the Corvette in the second part of the Moss Corner complex in between the 5a and 5b corners on the 10-turn, 2.459-mile course.

As the No. 01 Ferrari found success late in the race, the No. 02 Tequila Patrón Ferrari driven by Guy Cosmo and Ed Brown had their time to shine early in the event. Cosmo started the No. 02 Ferrari in the 10th position and used clever pit strategy and strong pace to go through into the one hour into the race. Cosmo led 34 minutes of the two-hour and 45-minute event before turning the Ferrari over to Brown. Race strategy got the best of the No. 02 team, which ultimately finished 10th in class.

Next up for the Extreme Speed Motorsports team is the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on August 2-4.

basically, they clog the air intakes and the engine has to shut off within 1 second (i.e. they aren't bypassing the air restrictors). apparently the 45 car failed this test post-race, resulting in the DQ. Flying Lizard has appealed but I don't see it being overturned, as the air restrictors are one of the primary tools the ALMS uses to level the playing field in GT.

btw, it was an epic battle, Ferrari got past the Vette for 2nd on the last lap; and it turned into a win! that's why you fight for every position

Flying Lizard Motorsports released a statement Tuesday explaining why its GT-winning No. 45 Porsche was excluded from Mosport for failing an anti-stall test. It reads as follows:

"Hi everyone – we've received lots of questions on the Mosport results. As you know, we won the race, but the No. 45 did not pass post-race technical inspection and we did not receive any points for the race win towards the championship. Many of you have asked: What is an engine stall test? Why didn't you pass? What does that mean?

Here are some answers for you: After each qualifying session and race, IMSA (the regulating body of the American Le Mans... Series) executes a series of checks on the top finishing cars to ensure that all participants meet the specified technical guidelines for their class. The stall test is one of these.

The purpose of this test is to check that no more air can get to the engine than the rules allow. Controlling this is one of the ways the Series balances the performance of the cars. Performing this test is pretty simple. While the car is idling, the ...air intakes are physically blocked. Blocking the air intakes should eliminate all air into the engine, causing it to stall. If the engine does not stall, it means that some additional air is getting to the engine, and it is possible that extra air could create more power.

There are many ways that extra air could get to the engine: cracks in the manifold, leaks in various seals, etc. To our surprise, the No. 45 did not stall during this test after the race and was disqualified. You can imagine all the mechanics and engine people pulling their hair out trying to figure out what had gone wrong. We could not see anything wrong, and so protested the disqualification.

We investigated the issue more thoroughly when the car was returned to us, and found that the air cleaner had been improperly fitted. This caused the device to flex during the race and the seal to eventually fail. This is very likely what caused us to fail the stall test. While we are not certain that this caused us any advantage, rules are rules, and we support the Steward's ruling. A very disappointing end to a great race. Now on to Mid-Ohio!"

At least this was after a sprint race. Just think of the repercussions of, say, winning the class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and then being disqualified for this!
