Is there a rev-limiter on MondialT's ?

A couple of months ago I purchased a '91 MondialT and just got it back from the major service and misc fix it stuff. When I run the engine up to around 6500 rpm it feels like a rev-limiter is kicking in. Since the redline is about 8k, is there something wrong or is something just needing an adjustment ?

 

Your limiter seems to be very conservative but maybe it was programmed to be that way.

Mondial T = 7200 RPM limit.
'89 348 = 7200 RPM limit.
'94 348 = 7560 RPM limit.

But, keep in mind that the rev limiter has ***two*** software triggers.

If you drive over the above limits for more than a few seconds (5 to 15), then the limiter kicks in (e.g. if you drive at 7210 RPMs for 15 seconds in the '89 348, then the rev limiter will kick in).

OR

If you go 200 RPMs over those thresholds, then the limiter kicks in almost immediately.

So for a brief surge, the Mondial T can momentarily hit 7400 RPMs, as can the '89 348.

The '94 Spider can briefly hit 7760 (really, 7800 because of the software delay).

Two triggers. Time above Threshold or +200 peak RPMs.

I'd call that too low, it should sing right up to redline. If any calibration is off on the tach it should be conservative. Something to get checked out.

Hey Jerry,
Did you find the problem? How does your car behave when you suspect the limiter kicks in early? I hit our limiter from time to time when I am shifting by sound only...it is very aggressive and intermittent. Sort if a rapid fire tick tick tick. Not smooth at all. I don't know if this is typical for automobile limiters.

I do know that when running on only one bank the t won't achieve max rpm, however the power is obviously low (albeit smooth.)

Edit: If you want to check your tach, the rpm in fifth gear should be half of your speed in MPH*100 eg: 3000rpm = 60 mph in 5th.

Not sure what problem you are referring to? That isn't me that is having issues at 6500, I have taken her to about 7200, but haven't felt the limiter kick in yet.

I did notice the speed/tach relationship. Car is geared a bit too stiff in my estimation, (taking off in 2nd is no problem), I would have made it about 10-15% taller, but that is how Enzo must have wanted it.....

My T revs to 8200 rpm courtesy of a custom chip by Competizione.

 

Anything else done to allow higher revs?

No, a freer flowing exhaust is the only other modification.

 

Which free flow exhaust do you have? I assume you have a Motronic 2.5 fuel system in your 1990? What did a pair of chips from Competizione for the ECUs cost?

 

I have a Stebro, originally installed with "test pipes". Competizione recently installed Hyperflow cats, as I did not like the odor. It also tones down the dB a bit. Let's say it's more civilized in a way.

 

When you rev to redline, does check engine light comes on?

 

One can replace/reprogram the ECU chips with the later 348 program which give about 400rpm plus to the rev-limiter on the T. I have done it. Search in the 348 section there is someone who can reprogram your chip and the removal is very well explained in several threads.

 

I've driven my Mondial t Coupe on track and on the road for over twenty-three years and not hit any rev limiter. I can assure you that I use the entire range...

 

I've gone a fair bit past 7000rpm and wondered if it even had a limiter, which it obviously does ;-)
