I paid $25,200 for my SD2. An SD3 has to be worth that....

Does it include the switch matrix cable? That alone is ca. $1500.

Check it has the right software and all the leads. If it says sd3privato on the instal disc label it isn't the full factory version and won't have full functionality of the porting software for the older models. Usually factory versions have the cavallino and the trident on the case and the badges on the machine, although i know someone who bought one with only the privato disc but the correct markings. When it's fired up make sure it hasn't got a "days left" counter at the base of the screen In a yellow band. Cables wise, as said, make sure the switch matrix cable is there, you should also get an octopus cable, a grey 3 pin a green-ended 16 way and a transformer. All this assumed, 25k sounds the right figure..

Isn't the SDX the latest and greatest? I thought that unit was about $18K USD. If that's the case, why would the SD3 be worth more?

As far as I know sdx (sd4) only covers later models. Sd3 is sd1 sd2 and sd3 so more model coverage AFAIK.

I wouldn't be looking to purchase sd4 anywhere quiet some time anyway, due to the length of the latest factory warranty on the latter models, I wouldn't see many anyway (suits me fine! ;)) so I think you will find that's why they hold their price. Then of course you can look at the alternative (leonardo) and speak to someone who has invested their money into one and how disappointed they are....few options for a pro-technician...

I'm looking to purchase diagnostic equipment for the 360 and later generation (including the 458) cars.

Does anyone have any experience with the latest SDX version and the level of backward compatability with SD1/2/3?

I obviously don't know what your target market is, but I find it surprising that you need 458 software yet, considering the length of the warranties on the newer models.
