I'm new to the Ferrari community. I just recently purchased my first. 1984 Mondial QV Cab
I had a few questions for other Mondial owners. Mine is a daily driver.
My Mondial idles rough on start like it's running on 6 cylinders. After a few seconds it clears up. When I push the throttle it makes a popping sound through the intake? Or maybe the passenger side exhaust pipe? It tends to hesitate at part throttle and pop like this till about 150 degrees then runs like a top. Once fully warm I have full acceleration. I know that these cars need to be warmed up prior to any hard driving. I usually don't push it past 4k rpms.
Is this common for these cars or is there something I should fix?
I do not know prior service but ignition components look good.
I enjoy driving the car even though I'm not used to the extremely slow off the line thing?
Once in higher rpms and cruising it's giddy up time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I do have a restoration shop but I am new to Ferrari. I restore mostly British cars.
So I'm used to poor electrical systems.

    Thanks

Possibilities include, but are not limited to the, warm up regulator (WUR) #18, auxiliary air valve (AAV) #30, auxiliary starter #34,

Please see this diagram for finding these components. http://www.ricambiamerica.com/parts_catalogs.php?M=FE&P=&V=diag&I=2700

Steve Magnusson is the guru on the site for these types of issues. I am certain he will find this thread and provided step by step advice.

If you get bored use the search function and you will find a number of threads discussing this subject. In the meantime welcome to the site and congratulations on your purchase.

+1. Also check the spark plug extenders. Easy fix if they are the problem. The spark can arc through the side of it, causing less than full power.

As both fellows said above. Lots of little things that can go wrong but they are great cars. And a car of this vintage is not immune to vaccuum leaks. The good news is the engines are stout. If you are used to wrenching on cars, dig in and check everything out, it will be fun. Does it stumble and pop when at idle and fully warmed up? These cars have great torque down low but aren't designed for dragstrip starts.

I'd start with ignition, check the plugs, extenders and ohm out the plug wires, caps have to come off for this. At least that way you can check it off the list. Corrosion is also a noted issue with many of these old cars. Whenever I get to an electrical connection on my car, I pull it apart, clean it and put some dielectric grease on it. I think of dielectric grease as a scarecrow for gremlins :)

Lots of information available on the Bosch FI, it's fun to learn that system too.

Enjoy your car and welcome, you've found a great resource, we're happy to have you!

Don't forget up update your profile a bit, we always like to know where people are dropping in from and we love pictures of Mondials! :)

Welcome in the Mondial world SprayCanMechanic(aerosoloverhaul), thats a fun name. Popping in the intake can be a lean mixture. Like PV said check for vaccum leak and also cold enrichening system.

It's hard to say how bad yours is from here, but I know on cold days mine doesn't start up and purr like a new Honda. If I take it ice cold and start to drive it immediately after starting it, it isn't too excited about accelerating. In the summer not so much an issue. I usually start the engine, then put the top down. After that it's ready to go.

clip timing light to each wire that may tell where failures are.
    Extenders are a suspect area.
    check plugs
clean distributor cap contacts replacement center buttons are available

Thanks for all the suggestions. I haven't had much time to work on mine but I will inspect the wires and plugs a little closer.
I'll post an update when I get it done.
    Thanks :)

If by this you mean that warm-running (at idle and at speed) is good, but cold-running is poor, I wouldn't make the ignition system my primary suspect (but no harm to verify ignition is OK).

What version 1984 Mondial QV -- US, euro, euro converted for US importation, something else?

It's a Us Version. It was titled in California
It's a catalyst version with all emissions.
I was leaning a little bit to the exhaust system.
I removed the cat and put a test pipe.
The muffler is original and whistles a bit.
I'm removing that this week and going custom straight pipes.
The header collector pipe donuts are brittle.
I will be replacing those to and the 02 sensor.
I will tune up anyway as I'm sure sure of "real" service history.
I'm going to do an engine out soon with all the bells and whistles.
What do you think about straight pipes?
    Thanks

Catless and no muffler? = UNACCEPTABLY LOUD! - but JMO...

What's a little weird about Bosch CIS is that you can have a lot of things wrong, and warm running can be sort of OKish because it gets tweaked up in that condition, but a lot of things have to be right for cold-running to work well (even if warm running is OK). On your model (K-Jet with Lambda), in order to investigate the poor cold-running symptom, the first three things that I would do are (and in this order):

    1. Confirm that the frequency valve (aka metering valve) is "buzzing" when the engine is running (it should buzz cold or warm),

    2. Check the cold and warm control pressures from the WUR (and, of course, the regulated supply pressure when doing that),

    3. Check that the AAV opens when cold and closes when warm.

    Good Hunting!

had similar symptoms last fall with stumbles and pops when cold: when hot seems like only 80% power. Analagous to having no accelerator pump on a carb'ed vehicle.

Congratulations on your new daily driver!!!!! Post pictures.

I'd start off with a large bottle of Chevron Fuel Injector Cleaner for now. Then drive it and enjoy it.

Do what all the other posters recommended closer to the winter. Your daily commuter will be on jack stands for a while.

When I got mine, I decided to do the belts over the weekend. While at it (get used to the "while at it...."), I started taking it more and more apart and ended up doing a major service. Three months later, after many hours of work and research, it was purring like a happy kitty. I am glad I did that, I learned a lot about the vehicle. So will you.

We are here. Ask questions. The only stupid question is the one that is not asked. And with these cars, a mistake from not asking the stupid question can be VERY expensive.

Well I had some time this weekend to do the tune up.
As I thought I was running on less than 8.
One wire had come loose from the cap on the rear bank.
I replaced all wires and plugs.
I also did a compression test and it tested perfectly.
Initial start up was much easier and much more power and acceleration.
    Extenders were new luckily.

    Thanks for everyone's help :)
