Challenge cars run cats?
My 360C has cats. If you look at the parts pic for the exhaust system for 360C (Table 15) it looks like you can get both cats and empty cats, i.e. test pipes. The latter are $3+k per side while the cats are listed at $5+k per side. Jes
for those running cats how long do they survive and what do you do to get them to survive? In SCCA racing over all classes removing cats are universally allowed because we seem to burn them up. My WAG (wild axx guess) is that wide open throttle being not 02 sensor regulated and therefore on ECU mapping program allows more fuel in the exhaust and then more heat killing them.
My 355 had cats on it when it was raced in the series. According to the service records they were replaced at 6000 miles. The 355CH exhaust wants to flow thru the upper side for 2 reasons, 1 being there is no by pass valve and 2 the shape of the pipes dictate it goes to the upper. So the lower, where the cats are, is in affect the bypass/overflow which should allow the units to survive longer. With that being said I do not know why they were replaced and also why are they there in the first place there are no cats in the upper system. Whew!!, more than you probably wanted to know but thought I should add this tidbit to thread, hahaha.
seems silly to run cats on a race car. do they run airpumps too? dont you have to inject air to get the cats to light up? Cats melt so easy, then its a mess
cats melt, block pipes, ruin motors. Just hollow them out, use a long tool to knock the substraight out. it will look stock, but its hollow. use a diode on the 02 sensor to set it to nuetral so you don't have to worry about the computer adjusting the mixture
