    Can anyone identify what the model number is for the Nippondenso starter which is then modified and used on our engines. I see prices ranging from $89 to $130 for use on Chrysler, GM and other cars. Should not be that hard to machine a mounting adapter. The prices I've seen for the modified version run from $319 to over $400.

    I didn't count the teeth on the pinion when I installed ours, but from memory its very much the same unit that all the racing shops sell for Chevy and Ford v8's. The pitch is pretty common on flywheels of that era, so its a matter of clocking the starter so that it clears the block and exhaust, and the pinion has the right clearance when engaging.

    If you're a machinist, go for it. Otherwise I'd just spend the money to reward the vendors who have already done the legwork and made it possible for the rest of us. ;)
