US GP in Austin Discussion and Speculation...

Historics and a Challenge race, I will be there forsure. I do not care what it takes but I will be there.

 

From what I have heard "confirmed" only Historic GP will be there which is the old F1 race group gang.

 

Great. That's where they belong.

Hopefully they will also get an invitation for the NY GP.

Indy had them as well for the first couple of years and thereafter they snubbed them.

 

The president of FNA told me we were confirmed for the CH race supporting F! at Austin.

Is F1 in the US really that big of an attraction? Are there enough people or corporations with dumb money to pay $15,000/year for an RV parking spot?

It's a fun time, but for a guy whose first F1 race weekend (including 1300 miles of car travel) was $60, I've got this feeling that attendees are viewed as 'marks'. Call it the McCombs effect.

 

Does anybody knows how will the organizers handle parking for the public? Will they have "trams" to haull people back and forth from parking areas to the entrance, simlilar to other venues? I am considering riding my motorcycle to make parking easier, but only if there are dedicated bike spaces....any inputs on this topic would be appreciated. thanks.

 

The folks around Indianapolis did not seem to think so.....

 

I have the Traffic Plan, it was a link back in a post a few pages back, they seem to be discouraging private vehicles altogether into the area, as they want to rely on the shuttle buses in from remote gathering/parking spots.

 

Not a bad idea....I will be staying around North Shore of Travis...so a bus leaving Lakeland Mall or something similar is actually a good choice for me....

I remember my tickets for the 2000 USGP were 85 bucks face value. Seems impossible now.

 

Well it's not F1, however I bought MotoGP tickets at INDY for later this month. 3 Day GA $70 and on site Main Gate 3 day parking $40. Not putting up with buying tickets to an event that transportation to and from seems so IFFY! Let alone airfare and lodging costs. Hotel reservations have been canceled.

 

I think mine at Indy in 2006 were $85-90 for section J (turn one). I don't remember what parking was, but it wasn't much and I was in a camping literally right outside turn one. The walk to my seats was a couple of minutes with the crowds. The ability to walk over to see some of the practices, quali's, or races, then walk back to my camping spot, grill up some food, have some beers, and then walk back over for later races, etc. was priceless.

+1 I had box seats for the 2005 USGP fiasco and was still able to get up, go walk down right by pit exit and watch the cars thunder out of the pits without anyone bothering me. I then walked over to the infield section and stood right by the fence as they went by for a few laps. I was also lucky enough to get a tour of the Ferrari garage by Chris Dyer. Didn't get many pics because cameras weren't allowed in the garage of course, but got one with my dad outside in front of MS's car. I was hoping he would make an appearance but no luck.



Indy was a great setup.

While I plan to attend the race in Austin, I acknowledge that F1 is likely to again fail in the USA. Even if they gave away the tickets for free, there is just too much other type racing available in the USA to attract enough fans to one, maybe two, stateside races a year. F1's only hope would be to have the race the same week-end at the same track as a NASCAR race; F1 on Saturday night with Nascar on Sunday.

 

I had planned on attending from the day it was announced but have just lost interest. I hope it works but just do not see the value in it. I am too old and spoiled to sleep in the back of my car and would not spend the money to go first class. That leaves 600 for 2 OK seats and 400 per night for 4 nights for a basic hotel that would cost 75 on a normal weekend. 3K for the low cost route to attend the race just seems crazy too me. I might could still swallow that but for the notion that traffic will be a nightmare and it will be difficult to get anywhere. I think Austin is a great city and they know how to handle big crowds with SXSW so hopefully I am wrong and they see a good turnout. They keep sending me notices with new seats released, does anyone know how many they have sold or plan on selling? Just curious.

 

I would love to know as well.. Unless Ticketmaster makes public how many tickets they have sold, I don't think we'll really ever get to know... other than looking at crowds on raceday.

You can actually zoom into indvidual GS sections to see how many tickets are left in that section. I guess you could count them all up (although there is no way to estimate GA from it).

 

I, for one, am really excited for this new track and for the F1 race. My primary residence is up in Minnesota, but I shelled out the 15 year PSL + ticket cost for two seats up in the elevated part of the turn 1 grandstand. I'm looking forward to it, I think it'll be great...

So according to the ticketmaster site there are no GA tickets available?!? Am I missing something or have the "sold out"?

 

I've been checking for over a month. I'm not sure it even went on sale. I'm assuming the GA tickets are the ones below 200.

 

How can GA tickets sell out?
